I packed my things ready to visit mom's hometown in Hokkaido. It's a fishing village so it would be a new experience for
me. I haven't been to any town outside Tokyo so I'm really excited for this trip. Normally my grandma would visit us if she
wants to see us,but this time she requested that we should go there and visit her.
"Sakura-chan, we're going, hayaku! my mom called.
"Hai, I'm coming!" I grab my bag and went out and met my mom.
"Are you excited? she queried.
I smiled at her, "of course I am, can't wait to try riding a boat" I replied excitedly.
.........................
Our flight was early so I just slept in the plane. After the plane landed we took a bus ride towards my mom's hometown.
I was looking at the beautiful scenery throughout the trip that I didn't notice that we finally arrived.
My grandma waited for us and when I saw her, I ran towards her and hugged her tightly. "How are you Obasama?" I asked
"I'm fine my dear Sakura" she replied beaming at me like I am the most precious thing in the world.
"Come inside,I prepared your favorite dish" she motioned me to the house.
My eyes widen with delight,"Tempura?" I blurted, then she nodded.
"Uwaah, Arigatou gozaimasu Obasama, you are the best!"
"Doitashimashite, anything for my beloved grandaughter" she winked, I really missed Obasama, she's the coolest grandma
ever!
We chatted while eating which was a relief, at home we couldn't do it, Otousan is really particular with observing table
manners and such. I had several helping since tempura is really my favorite.
After eating I sat at rocking chair in the porch. The sea breeze really felt good as it blows against my skin. I closed my
eyes, I felt grandma's presence. In this very porch, my grandma tells my mom and her siblings interesting stories of her
childhood, my mom says so, I want grandma to tell me a story too.
"Ne Obasama can you tell me how you met your first love?" the question just popped in my head and I asked it without
having a second thought.
"Eh, my first love? Hmmm....I wonder if I should tell you about it" she teased and I chuckled.
"He wasn't your grandfather, so probably it's not best to tell you about our story" she mused, but I was persistent and I
even looked at her with my puppy eyes which is my ultimate weapon, she really can't resist it that is why I really get
whatever I want when it comes to grandma. My mom told me its because grandma sees herself in me, she can't help but
be overindulgent to the point of spoiling me.
"Okay, I'll tell you then".
He was a boatman and his job was to give tourist a tour in several nice places in the island. My
friends and I agreed to take a boat ride as it was our summer vacation, he was our boat man and when we reached the
island we explored the surroundings with him in tow. Then the two of us got separated from the others, I was already
panicking but he remained composed and told me to just follow him, he even held my hand, I felt safe. then it began to
rain so we didn't have a choice but to look for a shelter and luckily we saw a cave. We took refuge at the cave, luckily he
brought a flashlight so we did a little spelunking while waiting for the rain to stop. While we explored the cave we talked
about our own little lives. He told me about being a boatman to support himself and his goal of graduating to a University.
He was planning to enroll in a University so he was saving for his tuition fees. I told him about my dream of becoming a
nurse. It was fun talking to him.I also had a great time spelunking , we stayed in the cave till the rain stopped. We
walked to the shores and found my friends were soaking wet and shivering. We left the island in a huff.
Ever since that day we kept seeing each other every weekend. When we were together every moment was pure bliss. That
time I knew I fell deeply in love with him. It was spring time when he asked me to be his girlfriend, under the Sakura tree
we shared our first kiss. I never knew Sakura could be that pretty when you're in love.
I find my grandma's love story very heart warming and just as I was about to tell her to continue...
"Okaasan, a man was looking for you" my mom interrupted.
"The boat is ready madam, are you going to tour the island again?" he asked, I frowned at my grandma, I didn't know she
always visits the island.
"No, this time my grand daughter will be the one who will do the sight seeing" she replied kindly.
I looked at her questioningly, she just nodded, then I looked at my mom who smiled at me.
"Take care ne Sakura-chan?" she reminded.
"Okay, we will get going then" he bowed and I hugged my mom and grandma before following the man.It was just a short
walk to the dock. When we arrived there I saw several people getting ready to ride the ferry boat. I was about to step on
the platform when the boat moved unsteadily thus I lost my balance.I thought I'm going to fall off so I close my eyes and
braced myself to the impact of cold water, but I felt someone tugged my hand and we both crashed to the ground, lucky
me I had him as my cushion. When I opened my eyes, I saw a boy my age, obviously he's in pain but he is trying to hide
it.
"Gomenasai, hontou ni gomenasai, daijobou desu ka?" I asked as I helped him stand up.
"Daijobou desu, how about you?" he asked looking worried.
"I'm fine thanks to you" I smiled.
"Ah...I'm Daisuke by the way, yoroshiku" he said.
"Sakura desu, yoroshiku" I replied beaming at my savior.
A/N: I just imagine that there is a place in Hokkaido where visitors could have a tour. I don't know if such a place exist.
