Spider-criticism

I saw the new Spiderman movie this weekend, and it was good.  But not great.  The action sequences thrilled, the story and characters were (mostly) engaging, but I couldn't help leaving the theater thinking, "Wow, that was a long movie.  Too long."  Personally, I think you could have taken Sandman completely out of the film and been left with a much tighter, much more engaging whole.  Sure, he made for some nice eye candy, but aside from that, the guy just really didn't have much to do.  Supposedly he has a sick daughter, but aside from a short sob story scene early on, she might as well not exist.  He doesn't have any real relationship to Peter, either - he's just some random schmo.

Oh, and did seeing Peter get all arrogant make anyone else think of this?
