After over a year of living with my parents, it looks like I'm finally going to move out. My friend Navindra and I are looking at renting a two-bedroom apartment somewhere in SW Portland. The main thrust of our relocation is to find a place with an easier commute and easier access to all the wonderful diversions that downtown PDX has to offer. Sure, we'd be giving up our blissfully rent-free existence, but the thought of being 10-15 minutes from both work and downtown is just too tasty to pass up.
So far the search has gone fairly well. Today we looked at three apartments. The first was extremely promising: spacious, affordable, with high ceilings, a big patio, you name it. The second was nice, but a little too small for our tastes (not to mention expensive). The third, well, we didn't even get in the door. Apparently the apartment complex had a 'salary cap' of sorts that was pegged at 150% the median income of the surrounding area. While individually, Na and I make less than the median income, together we went over the cap, so the apartments were off limits to us. Definitely one of the weirdest policies that I've ever come across. It's a shame, too, because those apartments were really, really nice. Brand new, eco-friendly, loaded with more spiffy features than you could shake a stick at. Grr...
