The Weather Wimps

Jan 04, 2006 08:38

The New Year began on Sunday, Jan. 1st, without the Tournament of Roses Parade and without the Rose Bowl. The Parade took place yesterday while it was raining (you can bet the band members and their parents wondered how much their instruments would be damaged). The Rose Bowl takes place tonight, Jan. 4th, beginning at 5 p.m. PST.

Why the delays? Because Californians, including yours truly, have learned once again that the line in "The Lady Is A Tramp" still rings true.

"Hates California, it's cold and it's damp!"

It's been raining and cold for days, although this morning the skies are blue and our weather forecasters are saying there's no rain in the forecast for the rest of the day.

In my hometown of Chicago, the Bears played no matter what the weather was. You don't know what cold is until you are sitting in Soldiers Field next to the shores of Lake Michigan on a cold December morning when the wind-chill factor is 40 below zero. That's Chicago for you.

Los Angeles is the home of "The Weather Wimps."

Usually, it doesn't rain for weeks or months at a time in Los Angeles. Green turns to brown. And we have forest fires that remove all of the dry vegetation and much more.

When it does rain, freeway and surface traffic come to a standstill. The Weather Wimps just don't know how to drive in the rain. Instead, they panic! Happens every single time. Fender-benders happen everywhere, and everywhere other drivers slow down to gawk at them.

As Sgt. Joe Friday would say, "This is the city...."
