"Come look at this!"
Husband calls from the window, looking down at our backyard. He was watching our cat, who was doing some Tai Chi.
That's exactly what he looked like. Doing that advance that only cats seem to be able to do, where they progress forward without looking like they are moving. So cool. I wish I could do it.
Why was he doing this? Look to the right a bit and spy our neighbours' cat, who we have always called "Not Max". (Our previous cat was "Max". To our then one year old the name made great sense. There was also "Not Not Max" for a while). Not Max is our Huey's friend. He is the only cat who is allowed on our property without eliciting growls and fur sticking up from our cat. Not Max is different.
When dogs are friends they behave very differently to cats. Dog friends get close, run together, play fight etc. Huey and Not Max do not play fight. There seems to be an unspoken rule between them, that they must maintain a good two metres distance between them. And they can't look at each other at the same time. One has to be looking the other way. With both these rules followed they enjoy hanging out together.
This morning they were hanging it near our sandpit. While Huey played look out, Not Max casually Tai Chi'd over to the sand, and readied himself to wee all over it. No! I hissed frantically at him from the window. Not Max leapt guiltily out of the sandpit. And I swear Huey looked at him (Not Max quickly turned the other way) and said "Ohhhhh, my people are watching, bother. Let's go and play at your place". And they both turned and made a dash over the fence together. Maintaining their two metre distance apart of course :)
