A street in Milan will be named after the slain Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya, the liberal Novaya Gazeta newspaper said on Tuesday.

"Milan city council has approved a proposal to name one of the city's streets after Anna Politkovskaya," the paper, which used to employ Politkovskaya before she was shot dead in an apparent contract killing outside her apartment in 2006, said on its Facebook account.

Politkovskaya won fame by highlighting human rights abuses by the Russian army and its allies in Chechnya.

"Politkovskaya Street should appear in Milan before summer," Novaya Gazeta said.

It said the proposal was initiated by the rights group AnnaViva (Anna is Alive).

"Anna Politkovskaya represented the journalism of courage, justice and the search for truth," the Milan council said in a statement.
