I'm half asleep and I am wide awake

[Lyn has been slow to get over the droning of Molly and Legault in rapid succession, but he finally seems to be emerging from the funk he hadn't entirely been aware he'd slipped into. At least, he's starting to take an interest in life again...although what rapidly sets in after that is boredom. Mayfield never handed him a job - possibly ( Read more... )

[...Doggy senses are tingling. Or, well, his stinkbug suddenly flies off his shoulder in terror and so he suspects that something has scared it, which would be anything larger than a small amoeba. Lucas stands up from his (dying) garden and takes a glance around.]

.........!

Oh! Mr. Lyn!

[Head-rubs are necessary! ...No this is still not weird he does this with coyote!Aaron too so it's totally fine.]

[Lyn huffs at this, which is rather cuter as a dog than when he does it as a human. Still, his tail wags a bit; he's happy to see Lucas is doing okay, and even though he might deny it, the head-rubs are kind of nice.

Well, having been a dog for Lucas, he's not sure if he's meant to stay as one or not for the boy's sake - and if so, for how long. So he gives Lucas an inquiring tilt of his head, ears cocked.]

[Lucas beams brightly as more head-rubs ensue, though he will eventually stop. ...After satisfying himself with a some petting, too.]

...OK, I'm done. Um. You can go back if you want, but we can talk either way, anyway.

[Lyn's head goes up at this, clearly startled.] We can?

Huh? Didn't we back when we met like this the first time?

[Lucas thinks back a little bit.]

...Maybe it was before. I guess I talk to animals so much, anyway, that it doesn't really matter if I hear them in words or not.

Oh. [Lyn has what, for a dog, seems to be a considering look on his face, head slightly cocked to the side.] Yeah, I'm pretty sure we didn't talk like this before. That would've been a hell of a lot more convenient. [He sits down on his haunches, absently scratching behind an ear.] I could stay this way for awhile if you want, though. It's not that big a deal, especially if we can talk either way.

Maybe it was that the animals back home were smarter, too. I mean, the Toot-Oriole knew all kinds of things, but I haven't met a bird here who wants to do anything more than build a nest...

It's up to you. You don't have to do anything you don't care to.

The Toot-Oriole. [Have you ever seen a dog look disgusted, Lucas? Because this one is really making a concerted effort.] Apparently how to make a decent goddamn joke wasn't among its breadth of fucking knowledge...

Like I said, I don't mind being a dog. It gets me free food sometimes, and nobody looks too hard at me 'cause I just seem like a normal dog. I can get away with pretty much anything. [His stubby tail wags slightly at this. He clearly enjoys the freedom.]

I thought it was clever. I wonder if he ever found anyone else to give lessons to...

Animals have it a lot easier than humans do, huh? You don't have go to work or school or anything, and if you're cute, people will feed you and love you even if they've never even seen you before.

[Lyn gets a head pat.]

Animals and really little kids, yeah. [Lyn lies down next to Lucas, his tail wagging automatically at the head pat. He may not even be consciously aware of it.] When I first came to the human world, I disguised myself as a kid. Needed to learn the ways and the language, y'know?

[The tail wagging invites more patting, of course, and Lucas eventually rests his hand on Lyn's back, stroking every now and then.]

Really?

[He couldn't see Lyn being too convincing as a small child...]

And no one noticed anything? I guess you don't really think of 'demon in disguise' even if you do run into someone strange, though...

What's to notice? I didn't know any human languages, so I just didn't say anything until I started picking up some English. So all I had to do in terms of acting to start with was look human enough and pathetic enough. Neither was all that hard. Most of it was just observation...that and changing my appearance a little to make it look like I was getting older.

Maybe I was a little strange, I dunno. It never got mentioned if anyone noticed, though. They probably figured I was abused or damaged or something. Which wasn't exactly wrong, I guess, just not how they thought.

...

[Lyn gets another few pets at that.]

You picked up on everything pretty well, then. Language, especially. I don't know what a... demon's accent would sound like - maybe a lot of cursing - but I can't really tell any different.

How did you decide what you wanted to look like for good?

[Lyn cocks his head to give Lucas a very sharp look, at least for a dog.] None of that significant pause shit. I'm a demon. All demons get the shit kicked outta them by whoever's higher on the ladder - and then they go kick the shit outta whoever's lower. Of course, if you're on the lowest rung like I was, you're just completely SOL, but that's why I got out. It was expected and it was a hell of a long time ago; I don't need pity. I took care of it, didn't I?

[...actually, maybe Lyn wasn't cocking an ear to give Lucas a look. It might've been to scratch an ear, as he's now doing.] But for fuck's sake, of course I don't have an accent by now. I'm, what, two hundred plus? I was around before America was fucking founded, at least by a couple years. If I still had a demonic accent by now, it'd practically have to be on purpose.

[Lucas' question is actually an interesting one, one he doesn't get often, and he sits up a bit, head tilted thoughtfully.] Well, that was kinda easy. I mean, demons are basically humanoid - head, torso, limbs, ( ... )

[America was founded... 1700 years ago? No wait that couldn't be right. Um. Well, he knew it was discovered by Saint Nina of the Pinto Beans, anyway.]

Even if that's how things normally are, it doesn't mean it's alright. I don't know about needing pity, but... I don't think sympathy ever hurt anyone.

[He'll try to take care of that itchy ear for you. A hug may slip in in the process.]

...Do you like it? Being human. Not just because it's an easy way to hide from the other demons, but... Just, being human in itself.

[Yeah, Lyn's world is clearly very different from Lucas'.

Lyn relaxes when Lucas scratches his ear - not having hands is one of the biggest downsides to animal forms - and doesn't try to shake him off when it becomes a hug, either. Not that he needs a hug or anything, but it's kind of nice.]

Oh hell yeah. Being human beats being a demon any day of the week, and twice on weekends. I mean, yeah, I like the immortality and some of the more useful powers of being a demon, but other than that? Humans have everything better.
