first impression - Is he German or Fren- wait, what did he just say?

TEN TRUE FACTS AND A SECRET -

1: The youngest and unexpected third child, Heike has always been the child that you could pretty much describe as just being there. Often middle of the road when compared to his sibling makes him stand out even less though he tries to prevent that from happening, rarely succeeding in his attempts. Indeed, all that usually happens is that as soon as he does something it will be compare, for better or worse, to his siblings who the topic will then stay on.

His own father is especially notorious for doing that, seemingly unaware of his youngest child's frustration or distress. Only his uncle pays much attention to him...beside his siblings of course.

2: The fact that it was decided that Heike was to be sent to a private school in Luxembourg probably didn't help things in that regard. His education there also explains why his use of language can seem a bit...all over the place. Writing and reading was generally done in German then French while talking and/or explanations were more often done in Luxembourgish with French or German used if more suitable words were needed. Throw in the Dutch and English he had to take (he would of rather done Portuguese than Dutch) and it’s not entirely surprising to hear him jump between the various languages when he’s talking to more than one person with the occasional stumble (unless you make him truly nervous or distress, he seems to forget everything then and just nods or shakes his head) Personally he doesn’t see himself as multilingual due to the nature of Luxembourg (more on that later).

He does like to take advantage of how few people tend to understand Luxembourgish. If he believes you have insulted him and is smiling at you as he comes out with the likes of “Jikkentriwwler” or “Fotzelekker” then the chances are he just insulted you back (in this case wanker and cuntsucker). Willem just gets this on the basis of being his older brother however.

3: Make no mistake, this boy is smart in some aspects, especially when it comes to money. He’s already managed to make himself a bit in preparation of coming to Liberty for university through investments on various stocks as well as a couple of sly sales on eBay mainly through some of Willem’s Nijntje plush that had been left back home though he is looking at trying to find some sort of accounting based job to his time at the university ‘just encase’ considering that mummy and daddy are probably funding his entire time here and, in all honest, keep himself entertained

4: Accounting, you see, wasn’t what Heike wanted to do at university, never mind for the rest of his life, and is only taking Economics (rather than the Business Management he wanted) as a minor because he wouldn’t of gotten to come to America to study otherwise. Instead he's wants to get involve in TV or radio as a producer or the likes. Many of his school trips involve visits to various RTL buildings and offices to see how everything is done, from post production on a soap to for how live studio programmes are organized and recorded. The whole thing was simply fascinating for him, especially how influential the company was (not even the BBC is bigger!) and how much it was involved in European media on a whole. It was his uncle who works for RTL Nederland that encouraged him to peruse his interest and even helped him convince his parents to let him take Media Studies as his major.

5: Heike is what you could call a Europhile. He adores most things relating to any organization that unites Europe under one cause and can't understand why some people (especially those in Britain) seem to think it's such a bad idea. In fact, if you want to take it a step further, Heike could probably give one of those beauty pageant speeches about world peace and wanting children to read. This may just be due to the set up in Luxembourg. TV and newspapers are generally in German, radio in Luxemburgish and food is French in quality ‘but German in quantity’. It makes it a tad hard for Heike to tell you what is from Luxembourg though. There’s very little on the artistic front that has actually been influential outside the country’s borders and pretty much any dish he comes out with is really German or French, no matter how much he insists otherwise.

6: Things between Heike's and his siblings are...interesting. For one thing, he absolutely adores Chloè and has hung on to the girl's every word since they were wee. He sees her as the one that truly cares about him though this has also meant he's rather prone to letting her get away with things that she probably shouldn't if he really thought about it...you could almost say she had him wrapped around her finger in how unquestioning he is whenever she asks something of Heike. Willem on the other hand is Heike's rival for their father's affection, even if his brother (or father for that matter) hasn't fully realised this. Don't get him wrong, he admires his big brother...he's just also put him on an incredibly high pedestal in terms of what he expects of Willem, mostly because his parents have always done so. Thus Heike's bouts of disapproval when he believes that his brother is not doing what is expected of him, though he has never applied this standard to himself or his sister. He does try to argue over these things but it often ends with Heike being so flustered that'll he come out with "Stiech der den Fanger an den Uarsch an maach wei een Probeller." (Stick a finger in your ass and turn it like a propeller) before finding somewhere to hide in embarrassment.

And yes, Heike has said this often enough to Willem that, not only does he knows what it means but it's probably a bizarre form of affection between them.

7: Despite being raised in a generally non-religious house hold, Heike has slowly became more immersed in the Catholic faith (which is what his family is suppose to be anyway). He wouldn’t call himself extremely devout but he’ll make the effort, dragging Willem and Chloé along if possible, to attend service every time he has the opportunity and even wear his ‘Sunday best’. He loves Easter and always took part in the pilgrimage for the Octave. He doesn’t feel the need to tell or know about others about religious beliefs though, if the country's census doesn't deem it essential then why should he?

8: While he didn’t get a chance to study Portuguese within school, he did manage outside of it. During one event that Heike was deemed still too young to attend, he was left in the care of Afonso Silva for reason that he can no longer remember. After initially spending the first hour scowling at the guy (being the only convenient thing he could blame on not going to the event), his attitude quickly changed upon realizing his babysitter for the evening was Portuguese. With a bribe of some of the fine wine (that wouldn’t be missed) from the cellar, Heike managed to get a crash course in the language though the end of the evening didn’t mark the end of Afonso’s time as the boy’s tutor. The pair have kept in regular contact (complete with further lessons) over emails and Skype, even if Heike isn’t entirely aware of how flirtatious he sometimes is towards the older man.

9: One thing Heike might struggle with here is the damn drinking age. The boy loves his alcohol and is probably more than capable of drinking most people under the table, which should be a bit more worrying that it’s sometimes seen as he’s been drinking since he was 16. French wine and German or Luxemburgish beers were the order of the day, he still has several cases of a couple of bottles of Diekirch lying about back home. He had hoped to mail some ahead of his arrival but he was told that he must observer American laws, no matter how crap they seem (and how many Americans really wait till they're 21 any way?)

10: Got his mobile number? Probably best not to compare it with someone else who has it, chances are it's not the same. Heike has...a lot of mobiles, five in fact and each for a certain purpose. Family, friend, university (his newest one), 'work' and school (which he's not entirely sure what to do with now). Some people do show up on more than one, his siblings are also in friends for example, but each phone has a set ringtone for calls and texts and Heike can tell them apart though it's rather amusing when he gets calls from more than one at the same time.

Secret (which is really a secret from him as well): For a while Heike has suspected there’s something his parent aren’t telling him. It's never really escaped him how distant his father often is to him, or how much more attention he gave Wilm and Chloè while his mother was always a bit more neutral in her love. Then again, maybe if he had paid more attention to his uncle as well, he would of notice how much of a favourite he is for him. And with good reason, that uncle is really his father. Oh mum is still mum, she just slept with the wrong van Peeter after a successful business meeting. Which is really impressive considering her husband wasn’t even there. For the sake of public image, it was decided that it would be best that Heike's true parentage wasn't revealed, not even Willem and Chloè know. It did mean his uncle, however, held a lot of influence over his life, essentially threatening to reveal the truth on a few occassions just to make sure Heike was sent in certain directions.

Writing Sample: "You won't cause any problems for your brother now?" Heike shook his head, not entirely trusting himself to respond to his mother in Dutch. The woman sighed, fixing his fringe as she gave him a look over, "You were amongst the top of your year and I'd like to think you'd continue that trend or better."

"Ou-yes mum." he murmured, glancing over at his father, too busy on his phone and iPad to wish his son a safe journey. Maybe if he was braver he'd interrupted, demand the man's attention with the ease his siblings seemed able to but he wasn't. Instead he ruffled his hair, knowing his mother would give an exasperated sigh but leave it.  "I'll give you a call once I'm there." he promised, gaining a smile from the woman before she gave him a push as his flight was declared over the intercom.

Stumbling, unprepared for the shove, he glanced back and watched as his mother went over and touched his father's arm, finally making him look up from his work. 'At least look guiltily!' he thought bitterly, picking up his on board bag while the man waved awkwardly at him.

Oh well, hopefully Willem was waiting for him in Liberty Airport...he'd just have to make sure that he didn't notice the Nijntje plush he was smuggling over just so the postage wouldn't be as much.
