As long as I can remember, when I became more technologically aware of computers in general... I had always used.... Firefox.
You see, when I was in Form 1 (13 years old), I was this clueless as fuck person when it came to the internet. This of course can be attributed that I wasn't really into computers at all... unless it was Heroes of Might and Magic related (THE best strategy game ever).
I first started using computers at age 4 (WHOO HOOO HELLO DOS!) and I was actually damn good at using prompts. I then rarely used the computer once my dad bought a Sega Genesis console (played Power Rangers like hell back then). When I was around 7/8, that was when I started playing Heroes of Might and Magic. Half of age 8, I was introduced to the Playstation, and yes, I gamed the hell out of it till I was around 11.
I remember being given homework in which we had to search for stuff on the internet and print it out. I had no clue what this 'internet' thing even is at that age. I told my dad and he was like ... 'ok I'll do it for you'. I observed him using some Jaring thing, and then opening up this fancy thing called Netscape, and he promptly raged when I picked up the phone for fun. He found the stuff for me and left me be. I never asked the internet again till a year later.
During Standard 6, I was stuck in a game called Chrono Cross. I didn't have a clue what to do at all! I needed help, and HOW! I asked my cousin and he told me to go to Gamefaqs. I remember going to the site and being WOW-ed at all the wealth of information related to video games. I was hooked. I remember having a notebook filled with helpful hints and shit (because my dad didn't let me use the printer for 'useless' things) and carrying it to class and memorizing the contents.
At 13, my friends were all very much obsessed with this site called Neopets. So naturally, no thanks to peer pressure, I wanted in. We would all start going to the com lab, abusing the poor poor dialup service, and play Neopets. At around this age, I was also exposed to chatting, though ICQ and mIRC never did catch on with me. MSN ftw man.
I was suddenly obsessed with the internet. At first I would just go on to chat. But then I discovered things like net surfing and stuff. And I did this all this using the sad sad Internet Explorer.
At 14, I started watching anime a bit hardcorely since it was the 'in' thing at the time in my circle of friends. It didn't help that my Grandma's house finally obtained Astro (satellite tv) and shit. And so, I started using the internet to uh... obtain songs and stuff. It was through this I learnt how to properly install things, browse random websites and burn CDs. BUT....
The biggest thing here is.... I was slowly starting to awaken as a geek. Nevermind that I had registered a Gamefaqs forum account and shit, but I started getting to know the computer browser. Thorugh TechTv, they taught me what kind of proper browsers to use, and the must have programs.
And.... that's when I met him....
FIREFOX
Firefox and I hit it off real well due to tabs and stuff. I was the kind of person who loved to open new windows and stuff. But tabbed browsing just made everything easier. So much so, I refused to use other browsers which did NOT have tabbed browsing.
The next few years were spent with the trusty FireFox by my side. We went through many extensions together, all at breakneck speed. We had fun going through many website, getting spammed, and then discovering that there was something which blocked said spam.
We would traverse many anime and game related websites, and later on in life, went shopping online and browsed for more fashion ideas. It brought me closer to some of my friends, and allowed me to express my thoughts via blogging. It also destroyed me for life, through the many ‘unsee’able things I found on a certain 4chan website. Though I was starting to change my browsing habits, using shortcuts instead of mouse clicks, FireFox faithfully stayed by my side, and accommodated my changes.
A few years ago, FireFox was shocked by the appearance of Chrome. I didn’t even care for Chrome since it didn’t have the level of customization offered by my trusty Firefox. While many made the leap, I faithfully stayed by FireFox’s side, and laughed in the face of peole who complained about ads and stuff. FireFox had already incorporated Google into its search bar so why would I need another browser which does the same thing?
Recently, I had updated my FireFox. And I was sad... sad at the fact that FireFox had become... so so SLOW. It was lagging every few minutes and had scroll and input lags even though I only had one tab open. I deduced it was due to my cache being filled to the brim since I never bother to clear it out. It didn’t work. I then deleted my history. It didn’t work either. I made a fresh reinstall of the browser. And it still didn’t work.
It was then that I thought.... wait. Maybe it’s not me. So I searched around and found that..... it WAS FireFox.
My heart just....sank. I tried so hard to save our relationship... He tried just as hard.. but we knew... we knew we needed time off.
I whispered a small “thank you for all those years together to him” as I prepared to move on. Till now, I regret leaving him behind...
But someday, I know he’ll change for the better. I know that one day we’d be compatible again. And I’ll wait for that day with bated breath.
For now, I’m maintaining a professional relationship with Chrome. He’s efficient and fast.. but he’s not the same. I kept trying to mould him into being a second FireFox.... but deep inside.. I know....
I know he’s different.
I miss you FireFox. We’ll always be together. Maybe not for now, but later on....
I'll need you by my side again.
