So it has been a surreal 3 weeks so far. Working at 16 E has been an amazing experience so far and I hope it becomes more rewarding as the summer rolls on. All my preceptors have been SO excellent that it makes my clinical experience during school look like SHIT. During clinicals, we get one patient and the nurses do not teach us. We are told to do what the CNA's are supposed to do (dont get me wrong, I appreciate what they do and are a TREMENDOUS help to nurses but one week of bed making is fine with me and If i have to bathe the patient or help the cna, no problem. I am, however there to learn nursing responsibilities and one week of learning basics is sufficient!)

In the second week of my job, we have already broken the rules and boy, does it feel good. Now it is not such a big deal. Also, going into the patient's room to do a set of vitals isnt so intimidating anymore! I used to waste 10 minutes of my time before I could work up the courage to go into the patient's room but now, it's like HEY WHAT IS GOING ON??? It's exciting to put lab skills into practice; NG tubes, drawing blood cultures (not just from central lines but sticking the actual vein and getting it from there) , urine and stool samples, dressing changes, foleys, handling admissions, and discharges...

yeah. that was weird. but I was fine. I had pangs in my chest for a little while but I got over it. It was better that she passed on and not living in pain and agony as many of the patients on this floor do. But the nurses, cnas, and doctors are so amazing, and within the first week, I felt like I belonged! They already are recruiting us and asking if we are coming back. So I have my fingers crossed! I dont know if I will stay in NYC after graduating but it is nice to know I have a job if I need it.
