I was forced to abandon my computer today due to the heat so I decided to catch up on my Smallville dvds. I haven't actually watched the show since the end of season 5 but I kept buying the dvds cos I figured I'd get back into it eventually. After rewatching the first three episodes of S5 I realised exactly why I don't watch it any more and it's not just the cheesy storylines.
Maybe I've been spoiled but lately I have no patience for stars of a show that either can't act or take really obvious shortcuts. When something terrible and life changing happens to a character and they're emotionally devastated I want to see every emotion cross their face. If the camera is going to be held on an actor's face for three or four seconds I want to see the pain, terror, despair etc. Some actors can do that, can make you feel that pain right along with them. Others, it's like looking at a block of wood and really what's the point of watching a show when there is no connection between the actor and you.
Finally, an ongoing pet peeve that's really been annoying me lately. The "Dramatic Whisper". Personally, nothing throws me out of the moment faster than an actress who decides that the best way to convey emotion is to start whispering. For example, in a show I'm watching at the moment one of the actresses started whispering at the bad guys when they tried to kidnap her. This was a real let down as previously when in a similar situation the actress had talked in a low controlled voice which was much more effective.
