9/11/11

I guess I may as well post what I remember about 9/11.

I was at work, and one of my coworkers shouted from his desk that a plane flew into one of the WTC towers. There had been several such stories earlier of would-be pilots crashing their cesna planes into buildings, so I figured this was just one more idiot falling victim to Darwin's rule.

Then, the news started to escalate. Pretty soon, everyone was checking news sites and proclaiming that a tower fell. We all migrated down to a conference room that had a TV and crammed in there to watch what was going on. The TV only had an antenna, so reception wasn't that good. We saw footage of the wreckage, but one tower was still standing. Then it slowly crumbled, and we were quiet.

That evening, when I drove home, everything looked so quiet. Not just "sounded," but "looked" quiet. I drove by RDU airport, and there wasn't a plane in the sky. I was so stunned the rest of the day.

The next payday, the president of the company gave us $2000 checks to help pay bills, support lost loved ones, etc. I signed my check over to the International Red Cross. If I couldn't be there to help, I could at least help financially.
