Kendra asked me what else has been ruined by pursuing an MA in English. And I would go off on the incredible misogyny of the Star Trek episode "The Enemy Within" in which Kirk's Evil Transporter Duplicate sexually assaults a female crew member. And this sexual assault is used for the end of the episode joke.
But look at this crazy fucking space dog!
This miracle of special effects and costume design represents my ability to ignore the casual misogyny. It might take a few more pictures of crazy fucking space dog to make Yeoman Rand sobbing as she says, "I wouldn't have gotten you in trouble" after Evil Kirk hid in her room and tried to rape her...
Also, Sulu being left to freeze to death on that crazy space dog planet is a metaphor for Spock and McCoy's inability to give a shit about anybody else while Kirk is having a brandy-fueled rape spree. I guess it's not really a metaphor--Good Kirk's the only one who seems to care. You can tell it's still season 1 when Bones is willing to say, "Fuck it, they're all going to die anyway." (If only they had some sort of craft that could be used for shuttling the crew to and from the ship...)
I probably shouldn't find it hilarious that the only thing Spock and McCoy can agree on in this episode is that they should tie Evil Kirk to one of the sickbay beds. Which symbolizes how, for us to function as a society, reason must restrain or dominate animal passions. With leather straps. And then go off on some way-too-excited tangent about human's negative and positive drives.
