He stared down at the man at his feet, his heart still pounding as his breath came in harsh pants.

Behind him, Yuuri was expressing his disbelief that the man lying unconscious before them was the long lost royal black sheep, and Wolfram snapped back at him reply, but it was all background noise to him.

Gegenhuber was alive. He was alive.

The child Greta moved toward the man’s prone form, and he swallowed the immediate warning that had sprung to his lips: ‘Don’t!’

After all, she was human.

And it was with that thought that it all came back to him in that timeless moment that he stared at the man; all that Gegenhuber had done, all the venom he had spread, all the pain and death he had caused…

A face rose in his memory-shining silver hair and pale blue eyes, a kind smile and warm hands at his chest as they threaded a locket around his neck…

He supressed it ruthlessly, as always, returning to the present in the next breath.

He moved forward instinctively as Greta crouched now before the unconscious Gegenhuber, his gaze moving to Wolfram as his brother darted forward too, only to fall back and look at him worriedly, clearly as much at a loss as he was.

But the child clung to the fallen man, speaking to him as if he were a friend. Certainly she had told them the stories, but it was a different thing to actually see the regard she had for Gegenhuber.

He had not spoken of it to Yuuri at the time, but when they had come home from Svalera with Nicola in tow, Gwendal had told him of the human girl and her relation to Grisela Gegenhuber.

‘I swear to you, Conrart,’ his brother had said as his eyes had blazed with uncharacteristic emotion, ‘if that damned hypocrite should ever set foot in Shin Makoku...’

He had simply shaken his head. ‘There is no need for it, Gwendal.’

His brother had not believed him, but it was true. There was no need for any bloodshed.

He was not angry.

He may have felt a murderous rage once, at the thought of all that Gegenhuber had been responsible for-directly and indirectly-he may once have been capable of plunging his sword into this hypocritical man’s unconscious body, forgoing honour and decency and fair play to give free reign to the fury that once been so much a part of him when he had railed against a fate that would take away something so pure, someone so good and gentle and kind-

But that man was gone now.

Shibuya Shouma had seen to that, making him change from the bitter, vengeful warrior he had once been to the the smiling protector of the Maou that he was now.

He could not go back to that rage, that anger, it was simply wasn’t in him anymore.

And so he said nothing, did nothing as Yuuri declared that he would take ‘Huber’ back to his homeland, despite whatever Gwendal would have to say about the matter.

Because he wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t.
