I always wanted to look those haughty professors with their bigoted values and say, ever so sweetly, "Why thank you. I learned the importance of logical cause and effect in regard to rational motives, and that characterization rather than plot is the backbone of good fiction, from romance novels. Suck it."

Word. The entire department was geared toward the assumption that anyone studying creative writing wanted to get published through the traditional industry. Er, no. Some of us just wanted to brush up on our technical skills and are only interested in telling a story, without editorial ghost-writing.
