*giggles, but not very nicely*
Someone just got cross at me for limiting the definition of "slash" to mean the pairing of canonically (as indicated) heterosexual characters, via fanon. They did that thing where a person identifies what you said/did as if though it were automatically a bad thing. It always makes me want to respond with, "Yes, and you know what else? The sky is blue!" They - I didn't keep track of who they are - seem to think the word means exactly the same thing as "homosexual". We've got a square is a rectangle but a rectangle is not necessarily a square situation.
Ah, when world terminology changes with generational gaps. *g* How all words change, evolve and acquire new meanings. Still, for now: Slash creates homosexuality where there is none shown (overtly). Yet, all homosexuality is not slash. Fanon is the crucial difference. Canon pairing = homosexual. Fanon pairing of het/null characters = slash. Very simple, really. In a nutshell, it's not slash if the characters involved are actually gay. It's merely a 'ship.
*grins fiercely* This may start a flamewar here, but it is the weekend and I am bored. So, let me add a mandatory Anti-Stupid: I have studied linguistics and carry a degree in the English language. You probably haven't and aren't. If you have and you are, then you damn well know what I'm talking about - even if I choose to end my sentence on a preposition.
