Chapter Five
When Paige had joined her in the kitchen, she had just been putting the final plate into the dishwasher. Somehow, the blonde had managed to sneak into the room and walk right up behind her, so that when she turned around, she was face to face with her, and a hand struck out and attacked her ribs.
A delighted squeal of laughter had risen from her lips, and she smiled when Paige finally gave-up her assault.
“I’ve come to tell you that Dylan left, and he wanted me to say goodbye. I could tell that they had something to talk about, so I left them alone.” She looked towards the archway that she had just walked through.
Alex nodded, and turned back to the dishwasher and closed it, pressing a button on the front and hearing it start-up. “You wanna talk?” she asked, looking Paige in the eye.
She’d been thinking about it all through dinner, and she decided that if there was one person that she was going to be able to open-up to, it wasn’t going to be some strange rape crisis counsellor; it was going to be Paige.
Paige seemed to understand, because she nodded, and then offered her arm, leading Alex through the archway opposite the dining room and down the hall to the living room.
After settling onto the couch, this time sitting Indian style and facing one another, Paige spoke.
“For me, it was the violence of the thing that got to me. I’ve only tried once since, but… well it didn’t happen. Everything just came rushing back. I was a virgin before, and I just wish I could have a new first time.”
Alex saw that Paige had started, knowing that it would prompt Alex to be open with her, and it worked, because Alex felt the words welling up inside her, and she spoke without really meaning to. “It was my dad. I wasn’t a virgin, but I think it hurts so much because I trusted him so much, and he broke that.”
Tears welling up in her eyes, she couldn’t look at Paige as images of her father’s predatory look as he pushed her onto her bed flashed through her mind. A sob broke from her throat, and she unsuccessfully tried to choke it back.
She saw him ripping open her shirt as she lay there, defenceless to his strength, which was pinning her down. “No, please no,” she choked on the words, and it wasn’t until she felt Paige’s arms around her that she realized she had spoken the words.
Trying to focus on the soothing words Paige was whispering to her or the soft caress of her hand on her hair, all she could remember was how her father had done the same thing to her, as she lay crying and broken. He would whisper that it would be okay, just like Paige was doing.
She couldn’t help but pull back, her whole body shuddering, looking at Paige but seeing him instead. Anger and hurt rose up in her chest, and she managed to push it down, but continued to back away.
“It’s me, hon, Paige. I’m not going to hurt you, I promise. Come back to me Alex, come on…” Paige’s words continued as she slowly walked towards Alex, and eventually she managed to get through, and Alex stopped moving, and let Paige reach her, wrapping her in a tight hug. “I’m here, Alex. I know what you’re going through, but I’m here, I promise you.”
Alex relaxed into her embrace, and let her tears fall freely, soaking the pink hoodie, but Paige didn’t seem to care, holding her close and rocking her slightly. “I hate him so much.”
“Shhhh,” she whispered in her ear, rubbing her back, “I know, hon. I know how you feel, trust me. You’ve gotta get it out. Let it all out. I’m here for you.”
They stayed in that position for quite a while, Paige rubbing her back, whispering sweet hushes in her ear until Paige finally pulled back and looked at her closely. “You look tired. Come on, I’ll tuck you in.”
They walked up stairs to Alex’s new room, Paige helping an almost child-like Alex up each step. Her room was filled with all new furniture and very few personal items. She’d wanted a fresh start, and her room was what reminded her most of her father, and what had happened to her. The new bed and new mattress were necessary, and Emily had decided that a fresh start should be just that, starting anew.
After getting changed in the bathroom down the hall, Alex walked into her room and allowed Paige to pull back the covers and then tuck them into her sides after she got under them.
With a smile, Paige muttered, “Close you’re eyes. Darkness is better,” and then made to leave the room.
“Wait,” Alex whispered as Paige reached the door. The blonde turned back to face her, her expression open for anything, willing to do anything Alex needed.
It was this understanding that prompted Alex to follow through with the question that was on her mind, “Will you stay with me?”
Paige just smiled and walked back over, pulling off the pink hoodie and settling on top of the covers, letting Alex crawl into her comforting embrace. “How’ve you been sleeping?” she asked, not looking down at her, but instead off to her right.
“Not a peaceful wink since it started, about eight months ago,” she replied, laying her head on Paige’s shoulder, facing inwards towards her neck.
A hand was suddenly in her hair, stroking soothingly, and this time, it didn’t remind her of her father, instead, it was a comforting gesture of a friend who genuinely cared about her feelings.
“Just sleep,” she whispered, “I’ll be here to fight your demons.”
And so she did, closing her eyes and letting the lull of dreamless sleep take her off into the land of oblivion, but not before she felt a soft pair of lips press against her forehead and a muttered, “You can do this. We can do this together.”
