The Law of the Crab

There's a few certain laws in the world of Hermit Crabs that fellow crab owners pass on to you as you stand over the crab tank in Denny's Pet World trying to figure out if the crawly guy in the Dora Explorer shell your daughter really loves is game to change his shell if you spring him because you're so past the Dora phase even if she isn't. There aren't many of these laws but from what I've gathered, the two main ones are: 1 - Hermit Crabs in captivity live 6 - 12 months if you're lucky and 2 - Hermit Crabs generally don't molt and live to tell about it.

Now, I had a poster hanging on my wall in college that listed all of Murphy's Laws. I figured I might as well be up front about who I was and that poster pretty much said it all which is why when things don't go the way they should, meaning downhill, I'm always caught a little off guard. Like how we just celebrated Zeus' 20 month anniversary with us. And how Mr. Krabs, who has been with us for about six months, molted this past weekend and is now hanging on the mesh in the back of the tank, happy in his new skin.

Kind of throws my whole life perspective out of whack, you know?
