I went to a great conference today at work with a fellow named Michael Stone (see website below). We were learning and discussing the concept of mindfulness, specifically as it related to our clinical practice, but there were a lot of exercises we did that I found personally helpful. It was so interesting to learn that while pain is inevitable, suffering is optional, and we suffer when we attach "stuff" (like feelings or judgments) to the things that happen in life.
He says, "to practice mindfulness meditation is to be present with truth of reality without escape strategies or attachments." Sound easy? it isn't!! But it's fascinating to work on it. I feel great this afternoon having had this experience. I encourage people, especially my friends who are struggling, to check out this man's website; there are some great articles, too, especially the one on "letting go of our attachment".
