ha- I thought I might get your attention with this-
so a few weekends ago nightline ran a debate between kirk cameron and 'the blasphemy challenge' people.
I had never heard of the blasphemy challenge, but to be fair to you, you should go to their website
http://www.blasphemychallenge.com before you read the rest of this. You can also go to
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sh3oIo6pvLM and watch the clips.
So, it strikes me that these 'atheists' seem surprisingly mad about this whole thing, and I really wish someone would have asked them about why they are so hurt by all of this.
The best opportunity for something like this was when the woman from the audience asked about how God could allow cancer- (it seemed to me that she must have lost someone close to her).
So, to anyone else who wonders how God give someone cancer.. here's my response.
You are right. Cancer is not fair. You know it in your soul- well, your inner self, if you prefer. You have a sense of justice, and equality- keep listening to that voice. God cries with you. Disasters kill people. Diseases kill people. People kill people. Why would a loving God cause this?
he doesn't cause this. He cares deeply for people, and he doesn't want robots. He could have created a world without friction- no death, no disease, no disasters- in fact, this is the world that we are intended for (if you believe the bible) and that's where your soul wants to be- it immediately senses the catastrophic violence that cancer and disasters are to our souls. "it's not fair!" with tears and screams our souls cry out, with weeping and power. you are absolutely right. It is not fair. It should not be like this. Our souls are not built for this place.
now the next causes of disasters and pain are people.-
Are people perfectly loving and unselfish? Y or N?
If yes, why are we so terrible to each other? How can priests molest those in their care? How can moms beat their kids? Why do people steal and lie? Why does rape or murder exist?
If No, by what standard are you judging us imperfect? I use the bible, because I believe it. If you think the bible is irrelevant, what do you use?
The bible I read shows me that people are naturally selfish, violent and cunning. After thousands of years of society, we still haven't irradicated poverty, violence, murder or even genocide. After seeing things like Hotel Rwanda, or The Last King of Scotland, and realizing my own selfish, evil desires, I am even more convinced of this.
What I'd like more than anything is for secular humanists (life is unfair:god doesn't exist, or we don't need god to fix society\religion doesn't fix society : we don't need religion) is to see that their disgust at poverty and their inner desire to correct society is near to God's heart. He agrees with you. Poverty disgusts Him, injustice disgusts Him and He wants to correct society.
He chooses to remain still in the face of these injustices because if He weighed in (like a gorilla on a seesaw) and refereed the world to keep it fair (which He could if he wanted); no one's love for Him would be genuine. He does not control the actions of people because he does not want robots. He wants people to love him and get to know Him and be in a relationship with him, and this would not be possible if he referreed. If no isn't an option - yes has no value.
I'm sorry if you've lost someone to cancer. I hope He gives you peace.
If you feel its worth the chance, try asking Him to give you peace, feel free to get angry and lay it all out.
He will respond.
