In the early 1900s, when his emancipated grandfather moved to Ohio, he shed his master's name and picked the one name that meant wealth in Akron: Firestone. It was the only wealthy thing about the family. Generations of hard-working family had not built up wealth or self-respect. Alquis Firestone ran away from home when he was 15, changed his name and joined the Navy at 18, and spent his entire career in the bowels of various battleships and aircraft carriers. When his twenty years were in, he retired back to Ohio and raised a family that respected him but left him for the "good life" in the Caribbean and California. When his wife died, he accepted a maintenance position at the hospital where Polorax was located.
He misses his family, but is willing to take what the tide brought to him: Nicolas and Mica. He's suspicious of everyone on principle except for Dr. V, but he's reliable and quick to do what needs to be done. When faced with the evidence, he'll shed whatever he's believed his entire life to do the right thing, even if the sacrifice is too large to consider.
