They brush each other's hands when the train suddenly lurches and people scramble to keep their balance. Neither of them says anything, hoping that the other doesn’t notice how it makes the hairs on the back of their necks stand up. The man with the mole on his chin leaves first, disappearing into a sea of people as the doors close. The man with the sunburned nose is left holding his right hand gently. He’s in shock and stares at the lines in his palm quietly-maybe if he looks hard enough he can find the answer as to why his heart is beating so quickly. Just what is this feeling?
-
The man with the mole on his chin bumps into a tall man with a bright smile. He doesn’t mean to-he was too distracted by the man with the peeling nose to notice where he was going. He murmurs an apology and the tall man shakes his head and pats the smaller man’s shoulder. The man with the mole doesn’t really get it, but he nods anyway and keeps on walking. He doesn’t understand this feeling-the one where you feel as if your stomach is being pulled in and your heart is bouncing up and down like a yo-yo. He doesn’t think he’ll ever figure it out, but he knows he can’t get enough of it.

They see each other again at an Italian restaurant. The man with a mole on his chin is stuck on some awful date with a girl who spends way too much money on her nails. She’s talking on and on about something and he gives a vague grunt when she looks at him expectantly. He looks over to find the chef with rather dark eyebrows and long lashes talking with a smaller man. The chef is ruffling the man’s hair softly and takes the ice tub full of fish from his hands. His nose wrinkles as he gives the chef a sleepy, yet charming smile. His date coughs and he whips his head to find her frowning at him. He gives a sly smile and she smiles back widely; she’s begun chatting again. He looks back and is caught by the sun-kissed man. He’s staring intently at him. He can feel his cheeks burning in embarrassment, but he keeps his eyes locked on the sleepy brown eyes from across the restaurant. He’s about to walk towards them, but realizes that he’s in the middle of a date and that’s just not done. With the stinging feeling of regret, he turns back to his date and sighs.

The man with the sunburned nose looks to find the man with the mole staring at him. He can feel that same bubbling sensation stirring within him and it’s almost too much to keep calm. He doesn’t know what else to do so he just stares back. He hears his name being called, but he ignores it. He’s too interested in those piercing light brown eyes to care about anything else. He’s about to make a move when the man turns back in his seat and he realizes that the man is with someone else. He feels a shooting sensation in the back of his stomach and it spirals upwards towards his heart. He doesn’t know why it hurts so much.
-
He scratches at his nose, when his friend grabs at his wrist. He tells the smaller man to stop, warning him that he’ll damage his skin if he scratches too much. He gives him a gentle smile and continues reading his newspaper. They’re in a café on a cold Thursday afternoon. The café is warm and cozy and it’s making him sleepy. He pulls at his sleeves and moves to get up. He tells his friend that he’s going to go to bed and his friend gives a small nod before he exits the store.
When he’s outside, he presses the button for the crosswalk. Cars are zooming past him in a blur of colors and he sighs. It’s too loud. The green man appears on the screen, and he crosses the street. He’s cutting through the park when he decides that his house is too far and opts for a park bench instead of a bed. He sits down, closes his eyes, and breathes. Suddenly, he hears music behind him. He turns and sees a man with his back turned, hunched over a well-used guitar. The melody is soft and calm, yet lonely and somber. He likes it. He wanders over to put in a 100 yen but freezes in motion at the sight.
It’s the man with the mole.
-
He’s ready to start singing, when he catches sight of a pair of shoes with loaves of bread on them. They are silly and whimsical and he wants to ask the owner if he’s stupid or something so he looks up. His eyes widen.
It’s the man with the sunburned nose.
They stare at each other in silence. Neither of them knows what to do.
“I-I like y-your song.”
“Thanks. I-I’m Nino.”
“I’m Ohno.”
“Well, Ohno, your shoes are ridiculous.” Nino grins.
Ohno beams and sits down beside Nino as he starts to play a new song. This time, it’s shy and innocent and full of something that feels a lot like beginning of love.
