This was really intriguing. At first, to be honest, I was kind of turned off by Lucas' smirking cruelty, but in the light of Cottle's suppressed distaste of Baltar's treatment, it was an interesting light and shadow piece, so to speak. You also walked an interesting line between Baltar being symapthetic, pathetic and just plain annoying. I liked too how you ended it, waiting until the last line to reveal that what has brought these two men together so reluctantly is this intimate task Cottle must conduct, which will require him to be both physically intimate with Baltar's delicate body, and emotionally intimate - in that the wound itself evokes ugly secrets shared between Baltar and Gaeta.

Finally, there just isn't enough Cottle fic out there! Go you!

I think the guards liked throwing Baltar around the cell, they seemed to do that without compunction in the later prison scenes, without compunction and a lot of relish. Poor old Gaius. Probably another reason why he didn't want a retrial.

I'm glad you liked the flow of the piece. Yes, Baltar is in turns pathetic and irritating, probably even to himself as he comes to terms with the state of things. And even Doc Cottle becomes part of Baltar's roller-coaster journey.

The fic needed an anchor of questioning, of humanity, and Doctor Cottle questioning his part in the proceedings seemed a way to highlight the 'sanctioned' cruelty. Also, there isn't enough of Doc Cottle out there. I really enjoyed writing him.

Thanks again!!

It was totally believable to me that they would do that, just hard to watch in a more extended way, as happens in this fic ( ... )

Baltar is the richest and most complex of characters, and I must admit, I'm a Gaius Baltar addict. I'd be an acolyte if I could, but as that's not an option, I'll settle for being a fangirl. *g*

I always felt that Gaius suffered much more than he was ever guilty of during his time on New Caprica. I love BSG as a whole, because it lays the story out in a pretty non-partisan way, and allows the viewer to navigate through using their own prisms of morality. Quite rare for any television show. Hope this makes sense as my analytic skills are really very bad. I usually operate from a more emotional base.

Oh, please feel free to add me as a friend. I have so few friends who share my Baltar love, or even understand it! Viva Gaius!!

*nods* Especially during this time period on the show. Season 1-3 did a great job with that.

Awesome. I'm adding you as soon as I finish this. I'm always ready to talk about Gaius! :)
