What's the big deal about Valentine's Day? Seriously, why do some single people froth at the mouth over it? This article by Charlie Brooker just strikes me as preposterous

Wow, I can totally appreciate why some people think it is a waste of time but Charlie Brooker just comes off as a bit um sad, lonely and embittered in that article. :/
Yes, his attempts to be funny just look like momentary bursts of clarity when he realises that he has made himself look a bit pathetic and undignified all things considered and is trying to claw back some self esteem.
And you just know that the Woman Who Done Him Wrong is out there reading it and thinking: 'Oh for f+cks sake, WE WERE ON A BREAK!' ;)
I'm well aware of the satire in there but just because people say that something is satire doesn't necessarily make it funny or good. My favourite bit of satire falling flat is strangely Jonathan Swift - he complains about the Laputian scientists having GRANDIOSE theories about hwo the sun will run out of energy and consume the earth and explode and we're discussing that in class and I'm going "er....that's exactly what's going to happen, though" Yes, there was no way of knowing that at the time except for the fact that they were investigating it and - well, example.
Yes, although because of you know what, satire is up there with sarcasm and irony on the list of things that I just don't get. I can tell if I think something is funny but it has to be laid on pretty thick and appear absolutely proposterous before I realise that it is supposed to be satirical, at which point everyone else is decrying it as too obvious and not subtle enough to be amusing. Watching political satire with me is apparently an exceedingly painful experience as it all falls flat and I just sit there looking confused and faintly apprehensive. ;)
