AAARRRRRR!
Hee. Guess what I saw last night?
I'm very happy; I was expecting the new Pirates of the Caribbean film to be absolute pants, considering I really didn't like the second one, but that was fun! For about an hour there I had no idea what the hell was going on but it was really, really fun! Johnny Depp is...well, obviously he's gorgeous, but he's such a good actor and can really convey so damned much with facial expressions. Orlando Bloom didn't suck either, which is nice. I might be partial to him when dressed as a pirate though (Orlando Bloom is a wet noodle unless he's dressed as a
crusader or a
pirate). Keira Knightly, on the other hand, seems to have developed a particular acting style called "jutting out lower jaw". This is what she does when she's being stern, sexy, emotional, defiant, or really doing anything other than neutrally standing there. She just...juts out her lower jaw. It's annoying. Also, GODDAMN, GIRL, eat some pies! She apparently covets Beth Ditto's figure, so eat some bloody pies and hide your freaking breastbone, will ya?
The film doesn't have the neatness of the first one; the plot isn't as, er, clear, the script isn't as tight, but thankfully this one has its own jokes instead of just panning ones off the sequel, and it has a good enough script, it's acted well, the effects are fun (and quite beautiful in some shots), it's shot beautifully and it's...well, it's really, really fun. And there's a monkey with its arse on fire. Oh, and Chow Yun Fat. It's worth the three hours and only seems to drag at the very end, which is thankfully amusing enough for it not to really matter that much (not like the end of Return of the King which was just like "oh my GOD I'm going to DIE IN THIS SEAT" - although points for accuracy, it ends exactly like the book does...FIVE THOUSAND PAGES LATER) and, did I mention this already?, it's FUN! Lots of fun! Oh, and it has Keith "fuckin'" Richards and that was....that was realy fucking cool. He was cool. I'm not entirely certain he's not dead and just a puppet and I'm a bit disappointed he didn't fall out of a tree on camera or anything, but that was really, really cool. Keith. Fuckin'. Richards. Oh, and Geoffrey Rush is fucking excellent as well. And, um, Johnny Depp. AAARRRRRR!!
In the spirit of not getting home before half eleven all week long, I shall be seeing Swan Lake at the Royal Opera House tonight. YAY! I love that ballet, I love Tchaikovsky and I fully expect to leave the ballet crying my eyes out for poor Odette.
And...the sun has just hid behind a cloud. Bah!
