Speaking of environmental causes...

...I'm thinking about this because of my brother walrusjester 's post about observing earth hour - which I am doing as well here in my motel room (computer unplugged and running on batteries, fyi).

So, I am wondering if any of my four live journal friends knows whether metal water bottles are really better for the environment than plastic ones.  Metal water bottles are definitely all the rage with the eco-conscious Reno crowd that I spend a lot of time with.  And considering I use water bottles in all sorts of temperatures when I'm in the field for my job, I am very happy for many reasons to not use plastic.

But I mean, really.  That metal has to come from somewhere - i.e., mining.  And it takes LOTS of energy to produce these bottles, presumably in all stages of production.  So really - am I really being eco-conscious using a metal water bottle or is it all marketing hype?  Being green is so trendy now that it's hard to tell whether something being marketed towards you is truly an earth happy thing or whether it's all advertising crap to get my money.

I guess what I'm ultimately getting at here is that I am tired of such good things - in this case the trend of people trying to be eco-conscious - being manipulated by marketing and twisted into a sick capitalistic shadow of themselves.  It's to the point where you can't trust anything marketed as holistic or eco friendly at face value, because someone, somewhere wants to figure out how to make as much money from gullible people as they possibly can.

Maybe a boring topic to you, but not to me - and if anyone has any insights, I'd be curious to know what you know!
