A Former TSA employee posted this in response to a guy asking about a TSO job when another poster trolled him for applying to work for the TSA:

TSA is a good job, and it opens up other opportunities for employment within the federal government.

Don't let people talk you out of it. That is what happened to me after I took the test back in 2003. If I would have stuck with it, I would have probably been a Secret Servicer UD officer or CBP agent/inspector by now.

Any kind of federal employment is good. Once you past probation, the only way you can get fired is when you screw to the point the criminal charges are pending.

Who cares about the salary. You need to take a look at the pension plan and benefits. WTF is a $100,000 a year salary going to do for you if you don't have a decent medical benefits?

Check out the benefits for TSA TSOs.

I am pretty sure you'll get hired as long as you don't have a criminal history and bad credit (more than $7500 in default federal/state taxes issues, and etc).

Once you're hired, pay attention during your classroom sessions. Take notes, and study when you get home. During your on the job training, listen to your lead.

Make sure that you are alert, and paying attention to your surroundings.

Make sure that you're doing your job when it comes to screening passengers and luggage. Some passengers might call you names that you have never heard of. Your feeling might get hurt, you might even get bashed by whining passengers on the Internet. Remember, they aren't the ones depositing your paycheck into your account. The federal government is.

Remember a few more things...

You do not have any powers to detain anyone. If someone gets out of line, then notify a law enforcement officer.
Do not put your hands on anyone unless you get permission. If you have to pat down a child, MAKE SURE YOU GET PERMISSION FROM THEIR LEGAL GUARDIAN.
When you're off duty, take off your uniform before you enter a store. Based on what I have seen in the news and on blogs, folks are darn near treating TSOs like their A list celebrities. They are always wait to see if they're buying a beer, sleeping in their car, or sleeping in a train station. If you don't feel like bringing a change of clothes with you, then just bring a light button down shirt in order to cover up your uniform.

Once you're off duty, you're not obligated to live a boring life.

That's my two cents.
