The Weight of You 1/1
She smells delightfully of magic and blood. Her magic. Her blood. As Damon and Jeremy tread silently through the woods, the weight of Bonnie in the vampire’s arms, he muses about the circumstances, which finds him now carrying her towards her not-so-final resting place to the house of witches. Love, loyalty and betrayal have all lead their band of people to the conclusion in this chapter in the Klaus saga. Although it is a temporary condition, his thoughts are no less morose and regretful, as though she had truly died on that cafeteria floor.
This slip of woman-child would have indeed died had it not been for some fast-talking on his part. Not only was he incensed by the possibility that Klaus would take out their ‘secret weapon; he was pissed that someone (other than himself) would dare try to frighten this girl that was on his short list of people he considered ‘his’. Even though Bonnie and he often found themselves at cross-purposes, the endgame was still the same. Save Elena, save the town. He could not reward such purpose and loyalty with her needless and untimely demise.
Looking down at her singularly beautiful, yet quirky features, he silently vows to her and to himself that he would do his best to take better care of the precious burden in his arms. She, who has seen so much yet done so little to experience more of the joys that life had to offer. His thoughts of those joys, veers over into more salacious territory. Sparing a glance at Jeremy he surmises that the boy and Bonnie have not yet had the opportunity to cross the threshold into the delicious carnal.
“So…you and Bonnie…haven’t?” Damon fishes.
Jeremy stumbles, giving the blue-eyed creature a double-take. “Wha-that’s not your business, Damon,” he answers incredulously, while hefting his bag of supplies.
Damon smiles, at young Gilbert’s unintended confirmation. He changes tactics. “Since it’s so obvious that you haven’t, I’d better not find that you’ve taken liberties with Bonnie while she’s out. I’d hate to have to snap your neck again.”
Jeremy sputters, “You’re an asshole, Damon. I would never take advantage of her, of anyone in this situation. Not to mention, since she’s in this state because she’s trying to save our lives. That’s more your thing, dick.”
Damon decided not to defend his dubious honor at the accusation. “I’m curious, though. Why haven’t you and she…” he waggles his eyebrows suggestively.
Jeremy runs a hand through his hair and replies. “Not that this is any of your business, but Bonnie thought that she would be seen as more worthy of harnessing the witches’ power by staying-“
“Pure. Innocent. Wholesome. Untouched. A virgin.” Damon fills in, looking down at her face again with newfound respect. He shrugs. “There is truth to that. Some magic and spells are better worked by those practitioners who haven’t been making the beast with two backs.”
Jeremy nods his head in affirmation. “Yeah, that’s what she said. There’s a lot that we’re looking forward to, once we can put Klaus down.”
Damon chuckles. “I’ll bet.”
Boy and vampire fall silent as they enter the cleared property of the abandoned mansion. Damon’s footsteps slow and he again thinks on all this girl’s personal sacrifices, made without hesitation and with no thought of self, all in the interests of some bigger cause than herself. The weight of the world on her slender shoulders, makes him feel heavy, convicted and in a sense, renewed in spirit. Looking down again, he makes a vow, to himself and to his burden in stasis. He will do better by her, in words and deeds. He will endeavor to pursue life more honorably. He will take his part in sharing this weight of hers.
As they approach the doorway of the mansion, Damon holds Bonnie closer is a parting embrace. “This is as far as I go, Jeremy.”
Jeremy moves to take Bonnie in his arms, but not before he witnesses the jumble of emotions and determination flicker across the vampire’s face. Jeremy lifts an eyebrow. “What just happened to you?”
Damon carefully hands Bonnie over. Although she is physically removed, the weight of her is no less on his spirit and mind. Clearing his throat, he pins the human boy with a look. “You take care of her. The moment you cease to treat her with anything but your all-consuming devotion, I will take her from you.”
Jeremy scoffs. “This coming from the guy who’s made it his mission in life to steal my sister away from his own brother? I’ll be good to her, not because of your threats, but because she deserves it.” Jeremy turns away and enters the house. He turns back to Damon suddenly. “Thank you, Damon. For saving her. Not many people have put her first.”
Damon lets the boy’s earlier crack about his sister slide. He nods, “Yeah. Maybe it’s time for that to change.” Damon turns, heading back to his car buoyed by the newfound weight of all the possibilities of Bonnie.
