I wrote this a long long time ago, but my aunt really liked it, so I'm going to post it. Also, my aunt is publishing my poetry in the local Neilsville, wisconsin paper. And I even have an interview. Weird. In other news, I've now lost ten pounds! Yay! Not sure how much total I'm going to lose, but I might just go for the big Five Oh. Enjoy!
For Grandpa
He smelled like cigarettes and soap
and of burning leaves every fall.
And in the summer he took us to the dam
to show us how to swing from ropes
into the water.
In the winter, he stayed inside
until we goaded him to come out,
and when we pushed him too far --
something children are especially skilled at --
he roared like a bear and bellowed like the wind.
He showed us the beauty of the forest.
This is an indian paintbrush.
This is a sparrow.
And if you follow these tracks,
you'll find a deer, like gold at the end
of a faraway rainbow.
He took us out and measured our success
in inches of fish caught from the stream,
who made their bed before breakfast,
and how many boyfriends we had this year.
He washed our mouths out with soap
And treated us like ladies- even when we hated it.
He smelled like freedom and hope
And smoke and formaldehyde.
