Two days have passed. My savior still has not opened his eyes. The police came by yesterday to question me. I told them the whole story. They seemed sensitive at first but after telling them that I was trying to get hit, they became stern and unforgiving.
“You mean to tell us that you walked out into the middle of the street knowing a vehicle was approaching?”
I nod.
“You put this man’s life in danger trying to kill yourself?”
“Unintentionally, yes,” I reply.
“Unintentionally?”
“I don’t even know this guy’s name. We’re complete strangers. I admit it. I put his life at risk, but I can’t take responsibility for his actions. He jumped into the road of his own accord.”
“If you don’t know each other, why don’t you leave the hospital?”
I shrug. “I’m just waiting for him to wake up. Once I’m sure he’s okay, I’ll leave. For the time being, I have a responsibility. Once he’s better… I won’t be needed. I’m just stalling I guess.”
“Look kid, I see hundreds of distraught Hybrids every year. It makes me really unhappy but there are organizations that will help you. There are psychiatric specialists, shelters, adoption agencies…”
“Fuck that! I’m not gonna end up a second hand pet to another lousy human.”
He seems offended by the malicious criticism of his species. Whatever. He remains calm despite his indignity.
“What will you do then?”
I shrug again. “Try again I guess. Find another way in a more private area where nobody will be able to stop me.”
He stands up and approaches me looking extremely pissed. He digs into my hair and takes hold of the remains of my left ear. I begin to protest when he jerks my head sideways so he can see the branded I.D. code on the back of the singed flesh.
“God dammit!” I hiss and try to push him away.
“Hold still or there’ll be trouble!” he warns.
I stop struggling. “Why bother? You can only read half of it anyway.”
He releases my ear with frustration after seeing that the beginning of the code had been melted off.
“Then how bout telling me who you belong to?”
“Pfft! Nobody owns me.”
“Why are you so uncooperative? We just want to send you home.”
“I have no home.”
He slams his palms on his lap in reaction to his frustration. “Enough games. Tell me your owner’s name or I’ll have no choice but to admit you to a Hybrid shelter.”
“It’s not a game,” I sneer. “My former master abandoned me last night and has already replaced me with a brand new puppy.”
“Ouch,” comments the other office. It’s the first thing I’ve heard him say since the questioning began.
“Fine, but I still want the name.”
“Griswold,” I mumble.
“Dio Griswold? The President of X.A. Project Supplies Inc. right?
“Yeah,” I reply softly.
“Alright, come with us then.”
“Didn’t you hear me? He abandoned me. He won’t take me back.”
“Then we’ll place you in a shelter until someone accepts responsibly for you.”
“No fucking way. I’m through with humans.”
He grabs my arm and tries to pull me toward the door. I struggle but he is too strong. As a last resort I kick him in the back of his knee and his leg buckles. He lets me go but his partner quickly picks up his slack. He twists my arm behind my back and shoves my face into the wall.
“Eat shit you loathsome creature!” I can hardly believe what I’m saying.
“I think you need to be taught a lesson,” He says as he begins to bend my arm back slowly, torturing me as it begins to ache. “Apologize,” he growls.
“Gn! No!” I groan.
“Moz, no!” shouts the other officer as he picks himself up off the ground.
He ignores his partner and presses harder. The stress is unbearable. Any further and he will break my arm. I grit my teeth. The pain is excruciating but my pride is too unrelenting. I can’t give in to this bastard.
“That’s enough! Release him or I’ll report you for using excessive force!”
I look over to see Lynus entering the room. He looks vexed. The pig eases his grip.
“This stray, attacked my partner.”
“Two wrongs don’t make a right. Let him go.”
“We’re just taking him to a shelter. He has no owner.”
“You needn’t worry about that. I’m taking care of him for the time being.”
I find Lynus’ commanding tone surprising but I am even more amazed by his willingness to defend me. The cop finally releases me. I want to kill him but I settle for glaring at him instead. Once they have left Lynus sits me down next to the unconscious one.
“Is your arm okay?”
“Yeah,” I answer.
He turns his attention to my savior, monitoring his vital signs.
“Thank you,” I mumble staring at the floor.
He remains silent and I’m not sure he has heard me. Then suddenly, I feel him gently stroking my hair. It’s a brief gesture but it eases my frustration.
No cops have been to the hospital to question me since then. I’m grateful for that, and yet I can’t help but agonize over what will happen when this man finally wakes up. Will I do as I threatened and attempt to kill myself again? Will they be too quick for me and force me to go to a shelter? Neither one sounds very appealing but these are my only choices. Eventually this unknown Good Samaritan will either wake up or get worse and die and then I will be forced make a decision.
For the time being though, I’m bored out of skull. I decide to take a walk around the hospital. My ventures take me to the cafeteria, the restroom, and to the pediatric wing once more. I stand in the hall and look through the window but the play room is empty.
“Sorry Mickī, They won’t be awake until eight or so.”
I flinch and turn to see Lynus standing to my left.
“Their asleep?”
“The bulk of patients and visitors come during the day and we don’t want the children to feel like animals in a zoo so we’ve acclimated them to be nocturnal. The windows are for monitoring purposes by the staff. Those who wish to adopt one of them must be prescreened before they are even allowed to see the kids.”
“Well, that explains why they were playing in here the night I came in. I actually just wanted to look in on Markily. How is he?”
Lynus shrugs. “About the same. No real obvious improvements.”
“I see.”
There is nothing more to say about Markily. We stand in silence for a moment. Finally he speaks.
“What’s the matter?” Bored?”
“Yeah.”
“There’s a TV in the recovery room.”
“There’s nothing interesting on.”
Suddenly his pager goes off. He looks at it saying, “Well, I would love to play with you but one of my other patients wants a sponge bath.”
I smile with amusement. “Have fun,” I tease.
He pats my shoulder as he walks past me.
I watch as he disappears around the corner with a smile. I lean back against the wall, taking one last look at the empty play room. After a moment I decide to head back to my room. When I get there a doctor is standing over the unconscious man apparently replacing his I.V. bag. He is a tall, broad shouldered individual with naturally spiked, brown hair. He turns quickly when he notices another person has entered the room.
He looks at me strangely and asks. “This your master?”
I glare at him. “No.”
He pauses for a moment confusion written on his face. “Lost then?”
“No. I’m sharing this room with sleeping beauty over there.”
He is still confused. “Well you seem fine would you like to be checked out?”
“No. I’m waiting for him to wake up.”
“Look, you’re not his pet and you’re not sick so I think you should perhaps go.”
“I said no. This man saved my life the other night and I’m not gonna leave until he wakes up!”
“Saved your life?”
“It was a suicide attempt, I admit it, but still.”
He lifts the clipboard out of the cubby at the foot of the bed. “Motor vehicle related accident, more specifically… Hit by a car?” he reads before looking at me curiously. He then shakes his head. “Never mind. Just don’t cause trouble for us. Okay?”
I feel slightly offended but I try not to make it noticeable. I just nod my head in agreement.
He looks at the clipboard again. “So you’re both under Lynus’ care?”
“Yeah.”
“Ah… So you’re the Hybrid he was telling me about, you got into a fight with those cops right?”
“It wasn’t a fight. I refused the go with them and one of them tried to break my arm. Why did he tell you that anyway?”
He shrugs. “We were eating dinner and I asked him about his day.”
“Eating dinner? So you’re his master?”
“His second, yes. I treated the injury he sustained from his first master and I became attached to him so I adopted him.”
“I see.” It’s all I can think to say. I can’t imagine trusting another human after something like that. On the other hand, Lynus seems happy, so this guy must be doing something right.
He writes a note on the chart and then puts his pen back in his lab coat pocket. He turns to me saying, “Well guess I’ll check back in with you two later.”
“’Kay,”
He smiles at me before leaving the room. So now I’m alone again. He isn’t my first choice of company but he was distracting me for a bit, which I appreciate. I turn on the TV and find a local news channel. It’s the only one that comes in. I sit down in the chair next to my savior and stare at the screen. I’m annoyed.
“You bastard. I’m bored stiff and you’re over there dreaming away. Wake up already.” I stare at him for a couple minutes though I know he won’t respond. “Fuck it. I’m gonna join you then,” I tell him as I lean back in the chair and close my eyes. With any luck, they’ll stay shut for a while.
At first I can hear the sound of the vitals monitor beeping but I keep my eyes closed through its monotony. Eventually, I don’t notice it anymore. It’s amazing how easy it is to fall asleep when you’re bored. My own dreams begin after a short time. Because my mind isn’t in a deep sleep, they are very vivid. The kinds of dreams you don’t completely forget when you wake up. I’m standing on a city sidewalk surrounded by a crowd of people. I can see their faces like flashes. I see Lynus I think. I can hear his voice but what is he saying? I see Markily, staring, like he did when I met him. In reality I would love to see him happy but my dreams won’t grant me that desire. I see my savior’s face. Not covered in tubes like now. In my dream I see him the way I saw him that night when he saved me. His forehead is bleeding into his eye and as the blood collects at his lower eyelid, it turns blue and continues down his cheek. Markily and Lynus appear at either side of him and they too have the blue mark. It makes me wonder… I touch my cheek and lift my fingers to see that I am right. There is also blue on my face. I am caught off guard a pair of arms wrapping around me and there are whispers. It’s his voice. It’s Dio. I begin to struggle but then freeze. It feels like he is raking his nail over my stomach. I look down and see a blue stain on my shirt; a stain that expands rapidly. More cuts appear on my arms, legs, chest, and throat. Before long I’m covered in ribbons of blue and I become weak. It feels like I’m bleeding to death.
I hear a loud thud and then I feel the throbbing pain in my skull. I open my eyes. I’m on the floor for some reason. I look around at the recovery room. Slowly I remember falling asleep and having a strange dream. I must have reacted physically while I was asleep and jerked myself out of the chair. I lift myself up to my knees and look lazily over at the unconscious one.
“Why are you bleeding?” I ask him.
