Title: Can't Let Go
Fandom: DC
Pairings: Clark/Bruce
Characters: Clark Kent/Superman; Bruce Wayne/Batman
Word Count:
Rating: PG
Warnings: Suggestive...
Synopsis: Letting go of something is supposed to be easy...but then you're heart is a stubborn thing.

A slight explanation beforehand:

I was bored...and I was messing with my Zune, and you know how my imagination goes, yes? Well, every song has a story behind it, or a story to tell with it. Since my other projects are on hold until I get my data back, I figured it'd be good practice to engage in something to keep me occupied. So, I give you a playlist of short stories that may or may not be related, with songs for titles. Hence the series title "Playlist". If you don't know how the song goes, feel free to look it up. :) It kinda helps.

So far none of these stories are related. :)

Song 5: Can’t Let Go" /

“This love is so dysfunctional,
It leaves me so emotional,
can't take it anymore but I can't let, can't let, can't let,
I can't let go…
I try my hardest to break free,
I'm so locked up and you got the key,
I'm in way too deep and I can't let, can't let, can't let,
I can't let go…”

“-Linda Kiraly “Can’t Let Go”

Everyone had their days…but it seemed like their days didn’t have an end to them. Sitting upon the rooftop staring into the fading sunset, a lone figure sighed and hung his head. Things like this happened in the movies and on television, or in well written random stories. At least, one would believe so. He certainly did, so it only hurt a little more when his romanticism of a love like no other was crushed several times over.

It felt like the sun setting…the warm fading from the surface of his skin and leaving him cold until the sun decided to come back. It was times like this he could find himself flying into the deepest orbits of space just to embrace the only warm thing he had left on this planet. Everything seemed to just…go wrong.

He looked down upon the city he’d decided to perch on. Certainly there was something going on somewhere, but he didn’t and wasn’t up to running off to save the day. There were more than enough people in this world to cover the major events, they could handle things without him for a little while. That decided, the blip on his communicator was turned off and life was silent for once. He didn’t have to listen to the bickering of several heroes who couldn’t see eye to eye, he didn’t have to listen to several reporters asking about him or making fun of his alter ego…and he certainly didn’t have to listen or think about the whereabouts of one Bruce Wayne.

Chances are that he was holed up in the manor again brooding for whatever reason there was to brood about this time. He honestly couldn’t figure out the man, and he didn’t know why he tried to. Bruce was no closer to letting him in than anyone else….so what was there to hang onto? Lately it seemed like all they did was fight over meaningless things…and neither one of them was bold enough to say that they were sorry. At least, Bruce never did. Life would go on as if they never argued, but things would flare up again and then…he’d be here. In the fading light…

Cold. Alone.

He sighed, putting his head in his arms. They’d been doing this dance for so long, he didn’t know another way to go about this. Their relationship was tumultuous at best, and being civil only occurred when he remained silent about things. But he couldn’t keep quiet about things, not when there was something to talk about…not when he still didn’t understand the scars over that heart that had somehow made its way into his own.

Could he say that he wanted to hold on a little longer? Could he say that he wanted another year of fighting, waiting for a time when it was okay to come around Bruce and hope that he was in a good mood?

No. He couldn’t. He didn’t want to.

But…it was so hard to leave it all. They had their good moments, and that was almost worth sticking out another day. However, it only reminded him of what he’d left in the first place, and while Bruce hadn’t quiet traveled down that path, they were too close to it for his own comfort.

No, it was time to end this…and though it pained him more than anything ever could, he just couldn’t deal with it another moment longer.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the symbol of hope he’d kept for over a year…and let it fall from his fingers to the ceiling roof to roll over the edge and fall into the waiting hands of someone below.

Maybe they could find some happiness.

“Clark!”

“Hmm?!” Who the hell was out here of all places?! Clark turned around and saw no one. He blinked , thinking that his hearing needed some checking, but he heard his name again. “What the--?!”

“CLARK!!”

It was coming from the edge of the roof. He walked to the edge to peer off of it, balking at the sight of Bruce staring up at him from the top window. What the hell was he doing here?! “Bruce-wha-?!”

Bruce held up the glimmering object…and Clark felt his chest clench. It figured. He frowned and backed away, fully intent on flying for other parts of the world. He didn’t need to be here. He’d made his decision and he was sticking to it.

“Wait a damn minute!!”

“WHY?!” Clark all but roared. “WHY should I WAIT?! That’s all I’ve been doing! Waiting! I’m tired of it…and I’m tired of being shoved on the shelf for your convenience! I’m not some prop you can use when you deem it necessary! And If you say I LOVE YOU, I swear I’m leaving and you will never find me!”

That seemed to keep Bruce’s mouth shut. Clark patted himself on the back for finally getting that off his chest, but he wasn’t prepared for what Bruce said.

“I do…but…I don’t deserve you,” he said so softly, Clark had to actually strain to hear it. “I don’t think anyone like me…deserves that kind of happiness. It’s…just too much to ask…and to handle…”

“W-what?!”

“I…I’m sorry. I’m so…so sorry….”

Did….did Bruce just apologize?! Clark scrambled to the edge of the building and saw nothing. There was no sign of Bruce, and no sign that he’d been there. The token of their fading hope was on the window ceil, hanging onto the broken crease in the gray slab and glimmering dimly in the sunlight. Clark sighed and fell to his knees, listening to the retreating heartbeat of Bruce and the thundering of this own heart.

He expected a better ending for his movie drama life…like Bruce busting down the doors of the rooftop and sweeping him up into his arms, but that was a little too much to ask. “Who am I kidding?” he muttered.

“Yourself.”

Clark looked up out the corner of his eye and watching in slow amazement as Bruce came into his line of sight and sat down aside him. Nothing was said for the breath of a moment, but nothing really needed to be said. Not aloud.

Bruce did say something though, and for the first time in a little while, Clark didn’t feel like the sun had abandoned him. “We…should talk.”

“Yeah….I think we should,” Clark sighed. “And Bruce…”

“Hmm?”

“….thanks for not leaving.”

Bruce rolled his eyes and moved close enough that their shoulders would touch. He carefully and thoughtfully placed a hand over Clark’s, sighing deeply when the connection finally sunk into his soul. “I think…that should be my line,” he said.

So it wasn’t a movie ending…but for Clark, it was close enough.
