My weight today is 188.5 lbs! I lost 4.4 pounds in the last 8 days!
I know part of this success is getting over my medical issue, and getting back to eating healthier. I also know that I've been a lot more active lately, especially over the weekend!
Thursday I went out and ran errands. On top of running here and there, I also had to wash three comforters at the laundromat. While I waited for them to wash and dry, I walked around the stores in the nearby strip mall. That means I was walking around for about 1.5 hours. Since I normally just sit on the couch all day, walking for even a little while still helped. I also cleaned out my old car (my late mother's car) and my new car, so I had to make several trips in and out of the apartment building. I was sweating a little by the time I was done with that. When Nick got out of work, we went to the mall to pick up a few things. All in all, it was a great start to what was going to be a busy weekend.
On Friday, we visited Nick's son. Since we moved to Boston last fall, his son now lives 5 hours away. Nick has trouble getting two consecutive days off, so we often take day trips out to see him. We'd like to stay overnight, but the tolls are over $30 (round trip) and it usually takes us 3 tanks of gas (sometimes 4) so it always costs us at least $130 just to travel. Add to that our half of the weeks childcare costs, any meals we get, any admission costs we pay, and souvenirs we buy for him, and each trip can easily run us $200 - $300. We typically do 2 or 3 visits per month, so... you do the math. It adds up! Tacking on an extra $50 for a night in a cruddy little motel room just feels like an expensive we can avoid. Don't get me wrong - seeing his son and spending time with him makes it all worth it, and I don't think Nick has ever actually added up how much we spend each time. (I'm the banker and the secretary in this house.) I know I never hesitate to spend money in regards to that kiddo. But a motel room? Not worth it. So we get up early, leave before sunrise, get there just before lunch time, leave around 8:00pm, and get home well after midnight.
But I digress. My point is that while with his son, we were very active. His son often asks me to pick him up (I thought this would make Nick feel left out, but he loves that his son goes to me), so I often leave for home with aching arms. We went roller skating very briefly, and after lunch at McDonald's, his son lead me into the Play Place. I said a little prayer as we traveled through tubes that were suspended from the ceiling by springs. The creaked and rocked as I quickly, yet carefully, climbed through them. I'm happy to report that I did not break the Play Place. After McDonald's, we headed to the mall (so we could play with Play-Doh in the food court tables). We walked around for a bit and I did a lot of lifting, carrying, and flipping of his son. My arms and upper back muscles were killing me at the end of the day.
Saturday Nick took me for my Valentine's Day gift - two tickets for the Boston Chocolate Trolley Tour. The tour itself wasn't that exciting, and the chocolate items we sampled were mostly dark (I prefer milk and white, myself), but it was a gorgeous day and we did a lot of walking. When we got to the last stop - a chocolate buffet - I listened to my body and didn't overdo it. I took a bite here and a bite there, but once I felt full (and a little sick) I stopped. I didn't eat stuff "just because it was there" or "to get my money's worth out of the tour." I just stopped and didn't feel bad about it. Little successes count!
After the tour on Saturday morning, we roller bladed in our back parking lot. Nick is 27 years old and he had never roller bladed before, So we practiced in our back parking lot for a while. That evening, we drove out to a local rink and skated for another 1.5 hours. By Saturday night, we were exhausted. Sunday we chilled around the house until Nick's store meeting.
I'm very happy about how active I was this weekend, and I don't want to go back to sitting on the couch all day every day. The downside is that I did something to my knee on Saturday and it's been bothering me ever since. I can't seem to find a good position to put it in, and by the end of each day, I'm in a lot of pain and can barely move it. I'll be calling a doctor today, but I'm afraid they'll tell me to take it easy and stay off of it. I don't want any more obstacles in my way.
I'll keep you posted.
