So today started off with a bit of excitement. Sam and I were having a lazy morning and all of a sudden there is frantic banging on my door. Go to the door only to find out that the ravine behind my apartment was on fire and that the fire had spread up to the building. The outside back wall of my apartment had the siding burning and melting off of it!
So of course we rush out and find out that the fire department has been called and is on the way. Then a few people grabbed the fire extinguishers out of their apartments and started spraying down the building to keep the fire down until the fire department could get it under control. The fire department showed up quickly and got everything doused.
The building itself is fine and there is no damage inside my apartment. A lot of the siding got burned/melted and came down off the side of the building and my patio chairs are toast. The ravine is quite crispy. It was very dry, brown and mostly dead from the drought so it just went up in a flash.
I'm really lucky that it wasn't any worse. Nobody was hurt and I don't think that there was any major damage to anyone's apartment. The wiring for the heat pumps got fried but mine has already been fixed.
It was all just a bit scary. Sam stayed with me for the day even though he was supposed to go off and herd children. He called in a substitute so that he could spend the day with me. That was a big help. I was really glad to not be left alone. Just having Sam sit and cuddle me really made a difference, I was feeling a bit shaky after everthing.
