First Class
First Class
Season 2
★ ★ ☆ ☆
Overview
The first season of First Class was about a young and naïve girl, Yoshinari Chinami (Sawajiri Erika) who gets thrown into the snake pit of a fashion magazine’s editorial department. She navigates the dangerous waters of her coworker’s personal agendas, fights her way to the top, gets knocked down and claws her way back up to the top, ultimately saving the company but leaving to pursue her own interests. I tell you this because season two is essentially the same. The only difference is that it takes place at a designer brand and Chinami is not so naïve anymore. She fights just as dirty as the rest of them but still manages to get knocked around quite a bit.
Closer Look
The sound design is pretty fantastic, Brighter Day by Amuro Namie is the perfect theme and I love the use of various inserts to fit the mood, especially the wild hunter music whenever someone is getting beat down. The editing also makes good use of frames and there are plentiful asides full of *itchy thoughts that showcase the colorful personalities gathered at Tatsuko Yano.
Although season two introduces almost entirely new cast, the old cast all make an appearance at one point or another and in some cases play an continue to play important, if not minor, roles in the new season. Unfortunately this means double the flash backs. Not only do you have to sit though reminiscing about the last episode, you also have to watch flashbacks all the way to season one.
Bottom Line
If this was a review for season one, I would have given three stars, but season two is literally the same story in new clothes and frankly wasn’t nearly as interesting. There are some new twists so it’s not the worst thing you can watch but unless you really liked the first season you might not want to bother.
