What are you hoping for? Do you gamble, want shows, night clubs, enjoy spectacles, etc.? Restaurants? Are you on a budget or being expensed? :) I've been a couple of times this year for conventions, etc.

I really enjoyed Cirque's "O" at Bellagio, and Penn and Teller are old geek favorites. For ultimate glam/spectacle of luxury, at least go see the Wynn, and especially their new hotel, Encore.

If you want to gamble casually, stick with craps (only certain bets!), and blackjack if you can follow it's basic strategy (stay away from 6:5 payouts). Both games have very small house odds when played correctly, and if you play for a while you can "earn" free meals, etc. I can elaborate if you want, or go peruse wizardofodds.com .

You'll find cheap rooms all along the strip during the week, and prices are higher on weekends. But if you're not too picky about room quality any big hotel on the strip I've seen is passable. You probably won't spend much time in there anyhow.

If you're driving, valet parking is always free. The monorail is a pain, and taxis aren't too bad. You can walk most places on the strip, too.

Downtown vegas/Fremont St. is worth seeing, too, they'll more aggressively want your business than the strip.

Thanks for the long reponse.

So, I am taking Sasha there to meet up with our other friend to celebrate their mutual birthday (same day). We aren't really into the gambling, so I would think shows and spectacles are more what we are looking for in terms of entertainment.

As for budget, I am going relatively conservative on where to stay (TI and MGM grand have good deals right now, so I am thinking about there) so I figured we could splurge a bit when we actually are there. I was trying to decide between a cirque show (either O or Zumanity) or Penn and Teller who I haven't seen since I was a soph in college. Have you seen them in Vegas? Any other fun things to see? I was tempted to see the sharks at Mandalay Bay. I am also on the lookout for veggie friendly restaurants and just really cool bars. I am a sucker for nicely made mixed drinks, infused vodkas and such. Also, dancing --- more in the goth/industrial vein or alterative genre instead of the techo/pick-up join type of place.

Good to know about the monorail. I also saw that it was $5 a ride - and for 3 or us, probably more cost effective to stick with taxis.

I've seen both O and Zumanity, and while they're both good, "O" was far better. Though Zumanity was a bit unique, in that it's an "erotic" cirque show (topless in many parts, lots of love/sex themes). Still tasteful and classy, but definitely a different slant on Cirque.

I haven't seen Penn & Teller in Vegas, but c'mon, it's Penn & Teller. :)

MGM is a nicer hotel than TI. The cannons blasting outside your window all night will drive you nuts, I hear. I think the Bellagio fountain shows are nearby TI though, which are worth watching.

Not sure about special veggie restaurants and whatnot, I'm sure they exist. I'd recommend dining and/or drinking at the Wynn though, or Encore. I splurged on a meal at Daniel Bouloud (Wynn), and it was amazing. There's even a top-notch cheese bar with samples, etc. Expensive but really nice.

For O or Bouloud, you may want to make reservations well in advance.

Enjoy!
