There are LOTS of Feral cats in Florida..so all my life, we've had cats that we've "adopted" from the wild. Most of them died from diseases that contracted from tom cats (ours have always been female for some reason). It was really heart breaking because we couldn't do anything for them since we've never really had enough money..and it was always ten times worse when they had kittens, because they died early on.
The cat I have now is named Feral (how appropriate, don't you think?). She started hanging around our house when she was a just a tiny kitten. My dad used to feed her, but he would never let him touch her..or the rest of my family. My mom lay out on our porch and talk to Feral in a really sweet voice, almost purring (haha) at her..she LOVED that. She would roll around in the dirt and have this lazy, high look on her face.
It took about 4 months before we could persuade Feral to acctually come into the house. She spent alot of time hiding from us, me especially..because I was about 10 years old and just loved to pester any animal (not harm them..just hold them and pet them and never let them go).
Anyways, fast forward to present..she LOVES me. I think I'm her favorite of the entire family. She's always in my room, always begging me for hugs and kisses, and wakes up ONLY when I come home to just to give me a hello cuddle. We've the same personality traits..she's incredibly loving, but get's jealous too easily. Talks and sleeps WAY too much..and has a really bad attitude if you catch her on the wrong day.

Overall, she's one kickass pussy.
