Puffin Cabin [ Alcove B1 ] ; Monday Afternoon [ NFB ]

Jul 17, 2006 15:51

After his workshop for the day, Alphonse grabbed a few things from his room up at the dorms and brought them back with him to his alcove.

He wasn't sure if Sakurazaki was in her alcove (or even returned yet), but he knocked on the doorframe to check.

[ ooc: Locked to that person in particular. Whoo. ]

oh look a serious moment, sakurazaki, puffin, cabins

Sakurazaki had returned; getting her things together and returning to the cabins was one of the first things she'd done after their workshop that morning and, since she didn't have much stuff anyway, it didn't take her long to be ready to head over. As it was, she was curious as to how well her laptop would work out in the cabins, and was sitting cross-legged on her bed, pecking at the keyboard with one of the cookies from earlier hanging from her mouth.

"Come in," she says around the cookie, so it's muffled and more like the suggestion of an invitation.

Alphonse pulled the curtain aside and walked in. When he spotted the cookie in her mouth, he grinned, "See? They came out fine."

Sakurazaki blushes deeply, quickly pulling the hanging cookie out of her mouth and setting it back on the small plate of a few of them she had setting beside her. And then, with a slightly embarrassed chuckle, she smiles. She closes up her laptop, running her hands she's started to habitually do over the little wing markings, and sets the computer aside as well.

Still a little pink faced, she smiles at him, shifting a little on the bed to make more room for him. "They didn't turn out too bad, no," she says. "Go ahead, have a seat."

Alphonse plopped down at the end of her bed, removed his shoes and then crossed his legs. After thinking for a moment, he turned his head towards Sakurazaki. "Um, I wanted to talk since..." he trailed off, trying to find the right wording. "Since a couple of weeks ago, I wasn't really clear on something, and I thought it'd only be fair if I filled in the holes for you."

Sakurazaki's head tilts slightly as her hands settle in her lap buried under the floofy skirt of her dress. It didn't really quite connect in her head because, if it was something he wasn't clear on, why would she need holes filled in? But considering that her knowledge of the whole situation was nothing but one big gaping hole, she didn't try to focus on overevaluating things when he hadn't even started talking about them. But she was suddenly feeling inexplicably nervous and a little worried.

"What is it?" It's the only thing she can really think to ask or say.

"You remember that week with the, erm... ghost issue, right?" Alphonse asked, even if he was sure what the answer was. "That Tuesday night, when we were talking in the common room?"

Sakurazaki nods, frowning a little. She certainly did remember; she remembered not being able to help him at all, which wasn't a pleasant thing to remind herself of. But she nods, responding slowly, "...I do."

"For starters, I was kind of hesitant to say who it was towards anyone, but... it's sort of old news, since a lot of others already know now," Alphonse continued, staring down at his hands. "Anyway, it was my mom... Well, I don't know that for a fact, but it pretty much looked and sounded like her."

Drawing in a quiet breath, Sakurazaki frowns, but only lets it touch her eyebrows. Her mouth remains in a firm, inexpressible line. Family...one thing Sakurazaki had never really known anything about. Was Alphonse going to ask her something about that? Was he going to ask something that she once again would not be able to help him with? She really didn't want to fail him twice at something he'd been so good to her about.

"...Go on." She tries to sound encouraging, but the soft prod is mostly just timid.

"And then there's that whole thing with my, um, memory," He made circular motions with his hand near his head, hoping she remembered what he was talking about. "The two are related, just to let you know. Since you asked about it then, and I was rather vague about them both... But, as I said, I thought it'd only be fair to explain them a little better now. I mean-- if you want."

"It isn't a matter of what I want, Alphonse," Sakurazaki tells him after a moment of considersation, "but what you want. I asked because I wanted to help you, and if explaining it now will help you, then, by all means, I want to hear it. I don't want you to feel like you owe it to me to tell me, though. I understand how closely people like to guard their secrets, but I also understand the importance of letting them out now..." She gives him a small smile at that moment; she'd never have known that if it weren't for him.

And yet, despite her speech, she also finds herself quietly asking, "Did...did she die...during your time of memory loss?"

"It's not really so much of a secret here as it is just... unfortunate events, I guess," Alphonse said. "Back home though? If the millitary caught wind of it, we would've gotten ourselves into a load of trouble, and even then it was hard to keep the lid on it." He shook his head, getting back to the question she asked. "Ah, no, much, much longer before that. I was about eight when she passed away, because of an illness going around." He paused, then slowly went on to ask, "Have you ever heard of a homunculous?"

Sakurazaki shakes her head lightly. "No, I haven't. It sounds Latin-ate..." Like something Negi-sensei or Evangeline-san might have used in one of their spells...

"They're souless beings created through alchemy," Alphonse explained. "Once she passed away, we wanted her back desperately. We thought we could recreate her and bring her soul back." His eyesight drifted from Sakurazaki back down at his hands. "It didn't work, in the end."

Sakurazaki felt a chill race down her spine. And while Alphonse's eyes drifted, hers remained nearly locked on him. "She...she didn't..." She seems unable to say what her mind is thinking.

"That's where my memory goes blank," Alphonse said, tapping at the edge of his head once. "But I do know some of what happened, if only because close friends know the story as well. What happened to my mom, I don't know, and I probably don't want to know. The rebound happened, and I ended up loosing my entire body because of it. Just about anything can be used as a trade in alchemy." He extended a hand out slightly, almost observing it-- those last moments were always such a blur, it happened so fast. "I had my own soul affixed to a suit of armor to keep me alive."
