Cuddles was a mad kitty.
He was demonstrating this by constantly pouncing on top of Alphonse's head over and over.
Alphonse wasn't quite sure why the kitty was mad, but if there was a way of communication between them, he would know it was because he left Cuddles in the room by himself the previous evening. Cuddles did not like this, apparently.
However, Alphonse did not speak kitty and Cuddles did not speak English, so he just had to cope with kitty fuzz attacking his face and futily trying to comfortably read.
