So next doors they have some ponies in a sad, sad pen in the back yard. Two cats, who spent a lot of their time hanging out in or around our house (because we feed them and give them fresh water) and a chihuahua.
Stella the chihuahua has a bit of a habit to escape.
Previous returnings were annoying, but actually possible because the neighbours were outside.
I can understand that your dog may escape once or twice, slipping through an open front door when you let someone in or arrive with groceries or whatever, but if this is a rather regular occurance, you have issues.
Last summer I once returned Stella, whilst Ann (neighbour) was sitting on the patio with a friend, and some kids (I'm assuming the friends) playing in the pool and she was totally surprised the dog had ran off.
Newsflash, if you take your pet outside with you, you need to pay attention to it (providing it's not a cat that habitually goes outside and knows it's way, obviously).
Today, Jos (Bert's granddad) suddenly shows up at my part of the house going "there's a dog inside, it's the neighbours, can you please help".
Jos is elderly and not quite as nimble as he used to be. So he was in very real danger of tripping over a hyperactive little dog.
Apparently Stella had arrived soaking wet and shivering, and Rosa (Bert's grandma) had dryed him (yes Stella is a he) off.
A kindness that Stella rewarded by peeing against a kitchen cabinet.
Which was the point where they got me.
So I took Stella to my part of the house, considering my options.
Loa thought it was all the AWESOME because he had a friend to play with. Stella, however, was getting pretty intimidated by Loa, so I grabbed a warm house coat, a rain jacket, made sure Stella was under both (with her head out of course, I didn't want to smother her) and carried her next doors.
I ring the doorbell, and what happens?
The noises inside from Yvonne (Ann's mother, who often shows up at her daughter's house during the day) stop. I knock on the window.
Still nothing.
I knock on the door, really loudly.
Still nothing.
I call out shouting I'm not standing in the rain for the fun of it, and that I have Stella.
Still no response.
I stomp off to the back of the house.
Whilst I'm on their driveway, Jos pops his head out and says to try the side door.
Note how Jos, who wasn't wearing his hearing aid, heard me perfectly fine (I'm pretty sure half the street did to be honest).
Knowing that the side door wasn't going to get me suddenly not ignored, I went 'round back, and surely, there was Yvonne, giving me the deer in the headlight stare. Possibly because my face was like a thundercloud.
Instead of just ADMITTING she was ignoring me, she came up with all kinds of bollox excuses for 1. leaving me in the rain with her daughter's dog, and 2. allowing the dog to be outside in the first place.
I admit I was pretty harsh in my rebuke...
I keep on seeing all these tv shows where government animal care units act against shit like this. I know the neighbours have been reported. So why the hell are they allowed to keep animals they are obviously neglecting?
rant,
animals,
animal neglect,
