La Strada dell'Arte

Strada dell'Arte was a blast. I have really, really missed art. No professional pics to link ya to, but featherynscale put one up on her lj. I made it on the cover of the KC Star Metro section, and the director of the festival went out of her way to say hello and thank me for the good publicity. Yay!

Here's the original, for those playing at home. This scan seems to be blue-shifted.

Got there at 7:30 am on Saturday. Should have availed myself of the coffee and donuts. triadruid helped me with gridwork, outlines, and some chalking in of background elements. Took a long lunch break to wander around and see other people's work. Mmm. Chipotle. David went home to mow the lawn (for the first time since we moved in), and I went back to work. The nice lady from the KC Star accosted me in the afternoon, and got some aerial pics of me working on the piece. She was kind enough to not photograph me from behind. Dad & friends came by to see me in the afternoon, and triadruid took me home around 6. Got back to work around 9am the next day, after coffee, donuts, and joining the other artists in bemoaning the vandalism that had happened in the night -- footprints and small (scooter-size) tire marks wound their way through the entire festival. Finished my piece around 1pm (this works out to about 13 hours).

Lit the printout I worked from on fire as an offering to the Muses.

Next time I do this, I must remember these things:
  • Builder's chalk lines for gridwork, not 2-ft. rulers.
  • SUNBLOCK. Second degree burns really, really suck.
  • Take Monday off in advance to recover.
  • Kneepads and/or gardeners pads.
  • Perhaps a back brace.
  • Several weights for holding down papers.
  • Mister / spray bottle to keep pastel dust from flying.
  • Sun hat.
  • Don't face South.
  • Sunblock for the lips, too.
  • Do original work, so when people ask me if this is my artwork, I can simply say "yes" rather than go into an art history lesson about the Art Noveau movement.

Utterly fabulous and worth the pain, though. An excellent ego boost and encouragement to continue doing art.

happy accidents, linky linky, art
