Aphrodite
Oh goddess of beauty and delight,
your presence overwhelms my senses -
with the scent of jasmine,
the feel of pearls slipping across silk,
the taste of honeyed figs at midnight.
Generous goddess,
pleasure drips from your fingertips
in a gracious cascade,
but seriously,
this is getting a little crazy.
While I am grateful for this bounty,
my knees go weak in awe,
I am so full of love I feel I might burst
But others, too
cry out for your blessing
Aphrodite
thank you
thank you
thank you
I offer you pearls and golden wine
full of love and gratitude
but I think I get the picture
and you can set down your velvet-trimmed club
My ears are ringing and I cannot see straight
my breath is ragged and weak
and I feel like sea foam caught in a whirlpool
You are soft as a peony petal,
sweet as honeysuckle nectar,
gentle as a girl's first kiss
and as overwhelming and unstoppable
as a tidal wave
that can destroy cities
Oh goddess
love is power,
power, love
truth known to mad poets and new lovers
and the wild ones who walk the in-between places.
May I always remember.
