A very interesting read.

A friend on Facebook posted a link to this interesting, albeit very dark interpretation of the Twilight saga: [note, major spoilers are contained therein and also in my post, in case you haven't read the entire series]:

I have actually heard many of these interpretations before, but ( Read more... )

Interesting. :) I generally got the feeling that Bella was a normal, relatively nice person (well, near the beginning of the story), but I think she was intentionally depicted as kind of "boring" by the author to sort of contrast how she was as a human versus how fascinating and strong she became as a vampire.

I found the overall story arc of Twilight to be enjoyable and entertaining, but part of me also kind of feels like the author somewhat copied the whole plotline of Buffy and Angel. Obviously Buffy's personality is much different than Bella's, but BtVS I think really created the storyline of a girl in high school who falls in love with a vampire, with them having a "doomed love" because of something preventing them from being ultimately happy together (In BtVS it's the gypsy curse on Angel and also just the fact that he's a vampire; in Twilight, it's Edward's lack of soul that makes him feel he shouldn't be with Bella). So ,part of me wonders whether there are a lot of teens out there right now who have never seen BtVS because it was before their time, who think that Twilight is completely original. Sigh.

(I had forgotten about Edward physically restraining her, btw....yikes!)

Well, I haven't read it in quite some time, but I seem to recall her thinking she was superior to her mother because she knew how to cook, and that she considered it her duty as a woman to cook food for her father. And she was all insecure about being pale and dark-haired because everyone in Phoenix was blonde and tanned. And she was certain the boys didn't like her even though they all fell for her instantly. But I'm not sure I'm really remembering all of that from before Edward saves her - that happens pretty early on, after all.

Yeah, Buffy might be lost on the younger generation in pretty much the same way Farscape would have been lost on me if it hadn't been for Netflix. Doomed love certainly isn't original, but yeah, I think Buffy probably innovated doomed love with vampires. I wonder if Buffy got any sort of bump among the younger generation due to the increased interest in vampire romances.

Do you remember Jacob sexually assaulting Bella? Her technique for getting out of that situation was to stop struggling, because struggling only encouraged him. *rage*

I so don't remember that!! Man. How disturbing. So basically they're both creeps in different ways.

I remember it more being like Bella wanted to cook for her dad because he had lived alone for a long time and she wanted to make sure he cared for himself, but it's been a while since I've read it.. :)
