running blues

Over the last few years, it seems like I'm getting slightly more aches and pains from running 3 days a week. Whether my knee aches during one run, or my shin twinges, or a hip muscle cramps up, or any of the above. Don't get me wrong - I still think running is one of the least-boring forms of cardio (second only to dancing), especially when it's nice enough to run outside. But I guess my body just doesn't recover quite as quickly as it used to.

There are a few things I could do to possibly reduce my overall achy-ness, one of which is physical therapy. I've been slightly neglectful of my physical therapy exercises over the last year, which I really don't have any excuse for other than "it takes a really long time to do if I actually do all the exercises." (I went to a sports medicine specialist 3 years ago because of the knee pain I had at the time that was getting worse)

I also think I need new running shoes. I have a tendency to keep using my shoes until they literally fall apart, because they're so damn expensive (usually $100+ for a decent pair of running shoes). Plus, I'm not a high-mileage runner in general, so I tend to think that my shoes should last much longer than most runners'. But maybe that's not quite true. Anyway.

I guess I was reminded of all of this because I just had one of those runs where my legs felt very 'heavy' and literally within the first 5 minutes my muscles started feeling achy and tired. But I wanted to take advantage of the gorgeous weather today, so I sucked it up and went out. I'm still glad I did, I just wish I'd had more energy during the workout!
