Last Friday we went to see Miranda July read stories from her new book. When someone asked if Miranda July missed Portland, she basically said yes, and no. Sort of a 'been there, done that' sentiment. I understand. For me, coming back from New York was great, but it was a big let-down in a lot of ways.

Back when Portland wasn't a big let-down, I remember coming downtown and wandering around aimlessly and I would see her walking around downtown, which was probably where she lived back then. It was the mid-90s. I didn't know who she was, but I thought she must be really interesting because she had a cloud of bleached hair sticking out in all directions from her head. Later on, we saw her perform her one-person shows: Love Diamond in 1998, then the Swan Tool in 2000. Portland doesn't exactly have a lot of Miranda July-types floating around...anyway, if you want to know what Miranda July is like, check out her amazing website for her new book, No One Belongs Here More Than You. If you weren't lucky enough to have her autograph her book in person on Friday, they have some autographed copies at Powells.com. Yes, I work for Powells. And no, they didn't ask me to tell you this. I woulda told ya anyway.
