Kittenmouse Radio playlist 3/12/2007

Growing up 30 miles or so from downtown Portland, Oregon made it slightly inconvenient to go to record stores when I was a teenager. The MAX train helped a little bit, but there were also a few really good record stores in Gresham where I used to pick up old David Bowie singles and Pink Floyd albums for pretty reasonable prices. Just try finding a 7 inch single of David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel" in a Portland record store now. Good luck with that.

There were two stores, pretty much next door to each other in downtown Gresham. One was Moon Dawg. The other one wasn't actually a record store, per se. It was an antique mall with a bunch of vendors in an old 3-floor former J.C. Penny department store on Roberts Ave, just off Powell Blvd. I used to love going there and looking around at all the amazing things for sale. They were always playing weird music from the 1960s and 1950s, too, like Frankie Valli and the Supremes and whatnot. On the top floor there was a section of old record albums and singles, tons and tons of them, stuffed in open boxes, and priced between $1 and $10, usually. I bought the David Bowie single there, and a 7 inch record of "In My Room," by the Beach Boys. In retrospect, it was probably the best record store I've ever been in. You can still find places sort of like this; boxes of old records in antique shops in rural places. Unfortunately, Moon Dawg closed a long time ago (late 90s, I think), and the antique store left as well. They opened up again in a spot in downtown Troutdale, but the record vendor didn't go with them, so tough luck, eh? I guess I should have bought more records there when I had a chance.
