I checked out season 1 of the Rockford Files on DVD from the public library a few weeks ago, and have been watching it ever since. In the 1970s, there were a lot more episodes in one season than there are now. I haven't made an exact count, but there are 3 double-sided discs, and each side has 4 episodes on it, so that makes about 24 one-hour episodes. Sheesh. This is what happens when you let the internet browser everyone else in the house uses save your library password.
So, at home, we have dark comedy from 1974, and we ended the show tonight with some dark metal from 2006 (Opeth)...not to mention Joy Division, Jim O'Rourke, Depeche Mode, Unwed Sailor, and the always-moody Jarvis Cocker. All pretty dark. It's not all gloom and doom, though. The Kingsmen were pretty cheery, and Trompe Le Monde from the Pixies has a soaring hopefull quality to it. Joanna Newsome is a little too offbeat to be classified as either dark or cheerful, but rewarding, in the end. Regina Spektor seems like she's in an encouraging mood with Ghost of Corporate Future, although her description of a guy taking off his shoes on a subway platform and stepping in someone else's bodily fluids is a little bit graphic. Ew.
