Arashi's Debut Profiles
Recently, I re-watched one of the interviews Arashi made during their debut in November 1999. It was interesting to go back and see them from 12+ years ago and reflect on the changes. Around their 10 year anniversary, a lot of information came out about Arashi's reflections since their debut and what they have learned. One thing they continually said, is that they had absolutely no clue what they were doing and were very surprised by debuting so suddenly. Looking back at this video clip, it is very apparent - the boys are nervous, Nino's eyes are flitting all over the place, and their comments don't help the conversation move along much. The interviewer has to lead Ohno along question by question to get him talking. I liked watching it though and makes me appreciate their efforts and accomplishments today.
Here are the profiles that were posted in the interview:
Aiba Masaki (16) - "a cute youth, who likes to eat cherries."
Matsumoto Jun (16) - "his favorite food is fruit. His nickname is MatsuJun."
Sakurai Sho (17) - "his favorite food is Italian. His nickname is Sho-kun."
Ninomiya Kazunari (16) - "his favorite food is 'soft things.' His personality is laid-back." (literally in interview: "my pace")
Ohno Satoshi (18) - "his favorite food is 'tanshio.' His sense of comic timing is excellent."
I laughed when I read these comments again... especially, Leader's. I think at that time they didn't understand his personality was very laid-back and he didn't always pay attention to the conversation flow. So, when he inserted a comment, it was funny and attributed to his "excellent" timing... haha.
I also noticed that even then, when the boys hadn't been together more than a month or two preparing, they were already pretty friendly - there was several instances of clapping shoulders (Ohno to Aiba) and knees (MatsuJun to Nino and Aiba), and side conversation (Nino and Sakurai). The boys were already getting along and developing their bond. It was still in the works though as there is lots of nervousness there.
One thing that stayed the same was Ohno being left with the last comment and the other boys already saying the pertinent pieces, leaving him to come up with something random - poor Leader:
"What I'll say is going to be like what everyone said, but..."
Every once in a while it's nice to go back and see the clips of the boys in their younger, less glamorous days. :)
I'm thinking about writing some fanfiction about them in their early debut time... it's a bit daunting though, so I'm gathering information. Any good sites to recommend with biographies, magazine articles, or chronological descriptions of Arashi events? I've found a few, but can always use more.
