He "knew" her
Why does the Bible always explicitly mention that a couple "knew" each other every time anyone has a kid? In any other story, the "knowing" part would just be implied. I think maybe they are pointing it out for a reason. The sex act has enough spiritual significance to be mentioned. Isn't Christianity a marriage/sex cult, after all? Or, at least, it was.
