NEEDS A BOX OF KITTENS STAT

SO, UH.

I don't get the inspiration to write and complete fan fiction very much, but when I do, it usually hits me all at once and then I HAVE TO ROLL WITH IT until it is complete. That happened tonight at like 2 am. And I wrote this and then CRIED LIKE A LITTLE GIRL because I depress myself. :|b

Since I don't feel like digging out my ancient FF.net account, I'll just leave this here. It has no title and it ends kind of abruptly, but I feel good about where I left it off. Just a drabble. |D

AND IN CASE YOU DIDN'T GET MY INITIAL WARNING THERE yeah, it'd kinda sad. :|a

Series:  Tales of the Abyss
Contains Spoilers.

How long had it been since she last dreamt of Ion?

She can still feel the warm breeze on her face as the sun shined down upon them. The weather had finally warmed up enough to allow for a picnic and Anise had prepared a special boxed lunch just for the occasion. It was to be just the two of them and she knew she made far too much food, but for the smile on Ion's face, she'd have made enough to feed the whole order.

They were talking. They're always talking in her dreams. That's all these were, right? And somehow, she could never remember what they were saying. Not at first. Whatever it was, the conversation was light and airy, and Ion was smiling the entire time. He let her speak, nodding occasionally. It felt like it went on for hours, as if she had an entire lifetime to cram in a matter of minutes.

"Anise." He'd gently interrupt her. "Why don't we sit and enjoy this delicious lunch?"

And so they would. Having set down her basket, Anise spread a blanket down over the grass and took a seat, waiting for Ion to make himself comfortable before opening what she brought. The contents were always the same. And there was always an extra rice ball for Ion that Anise would pretend to have made on accident, knowing they were his favorite.

"You don't have to go through so much trouble..." Is what he would say. It was nothing, really, doing this for Ion. It was the least she could do as his Fon Master guardian. He deserved this and so much more. So much...

This was the point in the dream where things would change.

Sometimes it stayed peaceful. She and Ion would continue talking and sometimes she would awaken wishing she had spoken faster to continue whatever topic had been at hand.

She wanted more time.

She always wanted more time.

The last dream she could recall was different. They were always different after she uncovered the extra rice ball, but this time was more different than usual. This time, Ion started the topic.

"Anise." His voice sounded distant and tired. "I think this will be our last picnic."

Anise didn't understand. It was a strange almost off-hand comment and she didn't think much of it at the time. They conversation flowed naturally from there, talking about the changing of the seasons, perhaps. The rainy season would start soon. Perhaps that was what he meant? Certainly they couldn't hold a picnic in the rain! Not with Ion's health.

The dream ended.

It wasn't any different from the others. Perhaps she would be mid-word, mid-sentence, when the sun peeked in through her window and woke up her. Usually her dreams with Ion left her feeling sad. It was hard not to feel sad when someone you cared about so much wasn't there anymore.

He wasn't there.

Ten years had passed. And it was on that morning that she awoke and was suddenly hit by those three words.

He wasn't there.

It was silly. Hadn't she accepted this years ago? Hadn't she mourned him properly by now? Life had moved on and she had moved on with it. How could it be, after ten years, she was suddenly struck with an overwhelming feeling of loss and loneliness?

He wasn't there.

And she didn't dream of Ion again.
