Han Geng pinched the bridge of his nose and forced himself to take a deep breath.

This sort of thing was exactly why his mother had warmed him to be wary of demons.

You just never knew when they'd decide that the hot, no-strings-attached sex meant they had free reign to turn your life upside down.

“What,” he asked through clenched teeth, “exactly do you think that I can do for him?”

The red-haired demon rolled his eyes and sighed, hands on his hips and looking for all the world like Geng was the one being difficult. “Fix him! Obviously. Isn't that what doctor's do?”

“I'm a vet! An animal doctor! Not a people doctor! or...” He glanced down at the patient and his bloody back and swallowed hard. A pair of bloody wings had been laid out beside him and a timid looking creature with similar - unharmed wings - stretched out behind him hovered at one side. His life had truly gotten strange since the day he'd gotten involved with Heechul. “an angel doctor.”

Heechul just waved this distinction off. “Angel, animal. They're nearly the same. He's almost like Changmin's pet bird.”

“Hey! He's not a pet.” A bigger demon glowered at them from the patient's other side. “And really Heechul, a vet?”

“You're lucky I know any kind of doctor. They're not really my type, you know.”

“You-”

“Dying angel here!” The timid looking one puffed up slightly, looking like an irritated little bantam hen. “Argue later.” His eyes focused on Hankyung and he considered for a moment before motioning him closer. “You know basic anatomy right, for wings in general and how they attach to a body?”

At Geng's hesitant nod, the angel made a face and motioned him closer. “That's good enough then. I'm the one reforming the connections, but I need someone to get them in the right place.”

Geng had to swallow the bile that threatened to force its way up as he got down to his knees and surveyed the damage close up. That any creature could do this to another... And to an angel? The clinical detachment of a doctor had never been his strong suit. He'd wanted to be a ballerina, but his parents had insisted on medical school. Being a veterinarian had been the most compromising alternative they'd even consider.

“Will this work?” The big demon asked softly, pain and fear in his voice.

The angel sighed and shrugged. “I don't know. This hasn't... This sort of thing has never happened before.”

He tried to ignore the whispers and simply concentrate on getting things lined back up where they should be. In the end, the bones and muscles in the wings really were quite similar to some of the larger birds he'd dealt with. “Okay, I think I got it.”

“You think?” The demon growled slightly and Geng might have quelled in fear except, really, he'd had a shitty day and he was used to dealing with Heechul.

“If you think you can do better, you're welcome to try.”

Heechul actually laughed, the sound sending pleasant little tingles up his back. “Ah, Changmin, looks like the little human isn't scared of you.”

“Demons are incapable of keeping their minds on task, aren't they?” The angel sighed and leaned in to look closer at Geng's work. He nodded, satisfied. “Ok, this might sting you a little, but I need you to hold them in place until I say otherwise, okay?”

Geng nodded, curiosity making the gore in his hands easier to ignore.

If he was expecting a light show or something impressive looking, though, he was largely disappointed. At first, he couldn't even tell anything was happening as the angel - and he was really going to have to find out what the little guy's name was at some point - let his eyes slip shut and seemed to concentrate deeply. The angel's face scrunched up as if in pain, but it took several more minutes before anything happened.

When the pain first seared his palms, Geng couldn't hold back the gasp. It was all he could do to maintain his hold on the damaged wings. Things began moving under his hands and he forced himself not to think about it. He clenched his eyes shut as the pain continued to build and just concentrated on not letting go.

He lost track of time for a moment as everything seemed to fade in and out. A moment could have passed or an eternity and he couldn't have said which.

Voices streamed over him, and suddenly he was being wrenched away and pressed hard against a familiar chest. His head felt like it was going to explode, his hands felt like they were melting away from his body. Maybe he was blind, deaf, and mute. His world was awash in pain and flashing lights.

Numbly, he decided that maybe he should listen to his mother more often.

Then there was nothing.
